HSK 2 vocabulary in 12 weeks

How much HSK 2 vocabulary fits in 12 weeks: about 150 new words on top of HSK 1, 2 to 3 a day across 60 sessions, plus listening. Not a guaranteed pass.

Twelve weeks can absorb the ~150 new words in classic HSK 2. They cannot absorb 300 new ones. The six-level paper totals about 300 cumulative items: the ~150 HSK 1 already asked for, plus another ~150. Wikipedia HSK summarizes that count. It is not a pass. It is not FSI’s 2,200-hour map.

If HSK 1 is still slipping, this calendar has not started. The prerequisite is the HSK 1 8-week plan. Syllabus and format live in the HSK 2 guide. This page is only the count: study days, a cap on new words, and review of the 300.

Key takeaways

  • Classic HSK 2 is about 300 cumulative words: ~150 from HSK 1 plus ~150 new. It is not 300 new cards.
  • Twelve weeks times 5 days is about 60 sessions. At 2 to 3 new words a day, the ~150 fit if the rest of the time repairs the 300. That is not a pass.
  • Listening is still on the paper. A list with no ear is not HSK 2. Register at chinesetest.cn. This site’s 12,432 public words are not the syllabus.
  • If HSK 1 is slipping, do not level up. The 8-week plan is the prerequisite. FSI’s 2,200 hours is professional working proficiency, not HSK 2.

300 cumulative is not 300 new

HSK 2 does not ask you to learn 300 words from scratch. It asks you to keep HSK 1’s ~150 and add ~150. Anyone dividing 300 by 12 weeks is solving a different sum.

Wikipedia HSK summarizes that six-level inventory. Registration and rules live at chinesetest.cn. CLEC coordinates international Chinese language education. None of the three mix cumulative with new.

That is the classic paper, not the 2021 framework. In 2021 the standard moved to nine bands, and the lexicon is counted differently there. If your center tests the long-running HSK, this post’s ceiling is those ~300 cumulative words. If it tests another scheme, ask the center. Do not guess from an app.

This site publishes long lists on purpose. There are 12,432 public words in the general inventory. That figure is not the HSK 2 syllabus. The HSK 2 list is for lookup. It is not week 3’s ocean. Treating “words on this site” as “words chinesetest.cn asks for” breaks the calendar before day 1.

Pinyin is still printed on the HSK 2 paper, as on HSK 1. That helps you read the exam. It does not spare you hanzi at home. 因为 (yīnwèi, because) and 所以 (suǒyǐ, so) show up together in audio. If you only studied the gloss, you hear two noises, not a cause.

It is not a speaking test either. Written HSK scores listening and reading. Speaking has a separate exam. You can know 已经 (yǐjīng, already) on a card and miss it in front of a verb. The plan treats that hole as the work, not a footnote.

The HSK 1 guide is still the floor. Without that floor, the 150 new words have nothing to sit on. They pile up.

The 12-week arithmetic

Twelve weeks times five study days is about 60 sessions. Split ~150 new words across 60 days and you get 2.5 words a day. In practice that is 2 or 3 new cards, not 5, not 15. The rest of each session repairs the 300 cumulative items.

The false sum is 300 new words across 60 days: 5 a day. That fraction treats HSK 1 as if it had vanished. It has not. The paper asks for it again. At 5 new “HSK 2” cards a day, 60 sessions invent 300 extra items. The center will not ask for them. Your review queue will still charge you for them.

Another false sum: 15 to 20 new words a day. That fills a list in two weeks and leaves the ear at zero. At 18 new cards per session, 60 days would be more than a thousand items. That is not HSK 2. It is a binge. The useful cap here is 2 to 3, inside the 20-minute routine. This article does not copy that routine. It only says what belongs in the window.

Twelve weeks at 20 minutes, five days a week, is 1,200 minutes: 20 hours on the clock. Study all seven days and it rises to about 28 hours. The U.S. Foreign Service Institute places Mandarin near 2,200 classroom hours for professional working proficiency (FSI overview). That number is not “hours to HSK 2.” It is the case against selling twelve weeks as workplace Chinese.

Weeks 1 and 2 are ten study days. At 2 new words a day you add 20. The rest is an HSK 1 audit. 谢谢 (xièxie), 多少钱 (duōshao qián, how much is it), and the pair 买 / 卖 (mǎi / mài, to buy / to sell) still have to be alive. If those cards flatten after ten days, you have not started HSK 2. You have opened another list.

Weeks 3 to 6 are twenty days. At 3 new words a day you add 60. New total at the end of week 6: about 80. Halfway through the calendar you should not be carrying 200 cards tagged “HSK 2.” You should be carrying 80 new words in sentences, plus the old 150 in rotation. A usable cap example: 我觉得 (wǒ juéde, I think) on the same day as 天气 (tiānqì, weather). One sentence said out loud: 我觉得今天天气很好. Not ten climate nouns.

Weeks 7 to 10 are another twenty days. Again 3 new words a day: 60. New total: about 140. Close to the ~150 in the jump. The ten that remain do not come from an extra PDF. They come from holes listening already flagged: 准备 (zhǔnbèi, to prepare), 可以 (kěyǐ, can), 因为…所以 heard, not only read.

Weeks 11 and 12 are ten days. Almost no new cards. The job is to hear and retrieve the 300. One of these days, a mock. The mock does not invent a score. It tells you whether 已经 dropped in the audio or in the character. If you miss three days, do not “catch up” on Sunday with forty cards. Return to the cap. Memory debt is paid in days.

If a day only has 10 minutes, cut new cards, not the queue. HSK 2’s inventory fits this clock only if review of the 300 is not postponed until “after I finish the list.” The list does not finish. It rotates.

Without listening it is not HSK 2

Closing 150 new cards is not HSK 2. The written paper still includes listening. If you only read glosses, you are studying a deck, not the exam.

HSK 1 already warned you about that hole. Typical listening and reading mistakes do not vanish when you change lists. They get longer. 因为…所以 fills two clauses. The audio will not wait while you translate the first.

Pinyin on the paper is not a license to train only Latin letters. At home, the card face is still hanzi. 已经 in front of 吃 (chī, to eat) is something you hear. If you studied it as a lone adverb, the “I already ate” dialogue arrives as noise. 准备 for a meeting and 可以 go are not the same card. In audio they play in the same sentence.

Five minutes of listening inside the 20 are not a bonus. They are half the exam. Pausing every syllable is studying a transcript. Hear the dialogue, answer who / where / when, hear it again. If in week 6 you still need the text for 天气, drop the new-word cap to 1 until the ear holds.

Do not mix a “more realistic” nine-band clip with the six-level paper either. Realistic for what. If the center tests the classic exam, train that ear. CLEC does not set your Sunday. The test center does. Check the session at chinesetest.cn. This calendar does not replace the rules.

A common miss: “listening makes me nervous, I’ll leave it for weeks 11 and 12.” Those two weeks repair leaks. They do not build an ear that was never there. Another: measuring the plan by a streak. The useful signal is reacting to 所以 before you translate. If that has not arrived, do not ask for a date. Ask for another week 11, not a new list.

Twelve weeks with no audio can fill 150 cards. They fill the false count. The paper will talk to you. If you have never heard 我觉得 without text, you have not done HSK 2. You have done Anki with a level tag.

Do not level up if HSK 1 is slipping

The 12-week calendar assumes the 8-week one already held the floor. If the floor is gone, raising the band is collecting.

Three signals that HSK 1 still does not hold. You do not hear 你好 (nǐ hǎo) before you read it. You say 谢谢 while hunting for the card. 买 and 卖 are the same syllable in your mouth. With any of the three in red, the 150 new words have nowhere to sit. Return to the HSK 1 8-week plan. HSK 2 new cards go to zero.

Other quiet leaks. 多少钱 ambushes you in a short clip. You can recite 我是学生 (wǒ shì xuésheng, I am a student) from memory and cannot read it split. Saturday you stuffed 40 cards “to get ahead,” and Monday the queue is a red wall. Getting ahead was hearing what you already had. Not opening HSK 2 “so you don’t get bored.” Boredom here is the method.

The HSK 1 guide is not filed away the day you change lists. The forgotten 20% of that level slows HSK 2 more than 天气 or 准备. If your deck mixed 2021-framework cards into the six-level paper, pull the extras out of the weekly queue. One map per week. Two maps is how you reach 400 “HSK 2” items and zero listening.

Do not use the 12,432 as a progress test either. More cards seen is not more of the paper covered. FSI’s 2,200 hours do not shrink because you ticked 80 words in a spreadsheet. Twelve weeks are 20 hours if you keep the clock. That can be enough for the ~150 jump if level 1 holds. It is not enough for a two-hour dinner without switching languages.

If you came here for an “HSK 2 in a month” miracle, this is not your piece. The miracle does not exist. The ~150 new words on a living HSK 1 do. Twelve weeks are a clock for that sum. Not for the score.

Start HSK 2 only if HSK 1 still holds

You do not need another list today. You need the count: 2 or 3 new words, the 300 in rotation, listening the same day. The HSK 2 guide reminds you what the level tests. This post tells you how many fit in 12 weeks, and when you should not open them.

Chinese Trainer fits if you want that queue already cut by band, with listening in the same account. HSK 1 and 2 sit in the free tier. The official exam still registers at chinesetest.cn.

If the HSK 1 signals hold, start HSK 2 at that cap. If 买 and 卖 still flatten, sign in anyway and stay on HSK 1. Do not raise the band so you feel like you are moving. Progress is the ear you already had, plus 2 new words you can say. The clock stays the same.

Frequently asked questions

How long does HSK 2 take?

If HSK 1 already holds and you study 20 minutes, five days a week, twelve weeks is an honest clock for the ~150 new words on the classic paper, with listening and review of the 300 cumulative items. That is not a guaranteed pass and not fluency.

How many words are in HSK 2?

Six-level HSK 2 is about 300 cumulative words: roughly 150 from HSK 1 plus roughly 150 new, as summarized on Wikipedia HSK. Those are not 300 new cards. The 2021 framework has nine bands; do not mix it with that paper.

Can you pass HSK 2 in 12 weeks?

You can cover the inventory if you do not invent 300 new words and you do not skip the ear. A blog should not sell you a score. A mock at the end tells you whether listening holds, not what the center will mark.

Should I start HSK 2 if HSK 1 is still slipping?

No. If 谢谢, 多少钱, or 买 and 卖 still flatten, the 12-week calendar has not started. Return to the 8-week plan and the HSK 1 guide. Raising the list does not repair a level you are already forgetting.
