HSK 2 guide: 300 words, 了, and classifiers
How to prepare HSK 2: about 300 cumulative words, 了, classifiers, listening, and an 8–10 week plan that keeps HSK 1 alive.
Six-level HSK 2 accumulates about 300 words and asks for Chinese in motion: completed actions, classifiers, and more detail in the audio. This is where list-only study shows. This guide gives a plan to move on without losing the HSK 1 base.

Which framework this guide covers
The classic HSK 2 band is about 300 words in total, not 150 isolated new items. Summary: Wikipedia HSK. Register: chinesetest.cn. Framework: CLEC.
If your center uses the 2021 nine-band outline, confirm the official paper. These pages follow HSK 1–6.
What changes from HSK 1
More everyday vocabulary: shopping, transport, weather, mood, plans, simple descriptions.
Listening is still relatively slow, but each line carries more detail and traps (numbers, dates, who does what).
You need classifiers (个, 本, 杯…) and 了 for completed actions. Without them, sentences sound translated from English.
Vocabulary: pace and themes
Pace: 15–20 new words/day, always with a classifier or complement when needed (三个人, 一本书, 两杯水).
Useful blocks: shopping and money, transport, weather, feelings (高兴, 累), activities (工作, 学习, 运动).
Golden rule: review HSK 1 in parallel. Forgetting 20% of level 1 slows level 2 more than new words help.
Mark leeches (failed 3×) and give them 5 extra minutes the same day. Inventory: HSK 2 list.
Structures to master
了 for change/completion: 我吃了 vs habitual 我每天吃饭.
Classifiers: 那个人, 这本书, 三辆车 — learn glued to the noun.
Time order: 我昨天去商店了 — time usually before the verb.
Basic degree: 很大, 很好. Adjectives as predicates without «to be.»
Questions with 什么 / 谁 / 哪儿 / 多少 and short natural answers.
Pinyin dictation 3×/week: forces the ear before you see characters.
Listening and reading
Listening: 10–15 min/day. After each dialogue, answer aloud: who? where? when? what was bought?
Reading: 100–150 character texts weekly. Underline classifiers and 了.
Record shopping/transport phrases; if tone contrast sounds flat, it is missing tones, not «accent.»
8–10 week plan
Weeks 1–2: HSK 1 audit + first 60–80 HSK 2 items + essential classifiers.
Weeks 3–5: 了, shopping, transport, weather; daily listening; one 40–60 character paragraph/week.
Weeks 6–7: feelings and plans; mini dialogues; first mixed listening+reading mock.
Weeks 8–10: intensive SRS, leech list, 2 full mocks, fix patterns (numbers, classifiers, 了).
Mistakes that block HSK 2
Skipping HSK 1 review «because I passed it.»
Using 个 for everything.
Adding 了 everywhere because English uses «already.»
Flashcards only, no listening — the listening section punishes that.
Exam-ready checklist
Checklist: frequent classifiers OK, 了 in context, stable short-dialogue listening, ≥85% HSK 2 vocabulary active in phrases.
When ready, move to HSK 3 — the listening jump is the hardest so far. Train audio without subtitles before you «feel ready.»
Next step
When the checklist is green, go to the HSK 3 guide and start subtitle-free audio before you feel ready: the listening jump is the hardest so far.
