HSK 1 guide: 150 words, exam format, 8-week plan
How to prepare HSK 1: about 150 words from the six-level exam, listening and reading, core grammar, an 8-week plan, and beginner mistakes.
HSK 1 is the first step of the six-level exam — the HSK 1 test beginners search for. It is not a baby level: it is the base of HSK 2 and 3. This page covers classic HSK 1 vocabulary (~150 words), the paper format, and when to register.

Which framework this guide covers
This guide follows HSK 1 of the six-level exam still offered at most centers. The classic band is about 150 words, summarized on Wikipedia HSK. Dates and centers: Chinese Testing International. The framework is run by CLEC.
In 2021 CLEC published a three-stage, nine-band outline. If your center uses that outline, confirm the paper on the official site. Do not mix both syllabi in the same week.
Who HSK 1 is for
Ideal if you start from zero or only know a few travel phrases. Also fits if you «recognize» words from generic apps but cannot produce speech or understand slow audio.
Realistic goal: in 6–12 weeks at 15–30 minutes/day you can master the vocabulary, basic structures, and feel comfortable with the exam format. You do not need to be bilingual — you need to react quickly to a small, concrete set.
What the exam asks (and how many words)
Official HSK 1 centers on about 150 words. The exam combines listening and reading (no handwritten characters in the most common classic format). Questions are short: matching, choosing the correct option, understanding numbers, greetings, and everyday situations.
Typical topics: introductions, family, numbers and prices, days and times, basic food, nearby places (home, school, shop), high-frequency verbs (是, 有, 去, 来, 吃, 喝, 看, 听), and particles like 吗 and 的.
The lexicon for this level is on the HSK 1 list. Use it as an inventory, not as a study deck: every item should enter a sentence.
Vocabulary: study without dead lists
Recommended pace: 10–15 new words/day, always inside a phrase. Example: not just 我, but 我是学生 and 我叫….
Prioritize thematic blocks: greetings → numbers → family → time → food → places. Each block should support a 4–6 turn mini dialogue.
Use spaced repetition (SRS): 15 minutes of daily review beats two hours on Sunday. If you use the app, flashcards already schedule that interval.
Characters: write 5/day with stroke order. You do not need calligraphy mastery — you do need to recognize and write the most frequent ones without hesitation.
Essential grammar (with examples)
Basic SVO: 我吃米饭. Chinese does not conjugate verbs; time is marked with particles and adverbs.
To be / identification: 我是老师. Yes/no questions: 你是学生吗?
Possession and attribute with 的: 我的书, 好的朋友.
Existence / have: 我有两个哥哥.
Location with 在: 他在家.
Pattern 是…的 (emphasis on known info): 我是昨天来的. Practice from week one — it appears often in real dialogue.
Do not memorize the rule and move on: say each example aloud, record yourself, and compare tones.
Listening and pronunciation from day one
The costliest HSK 1 mistake is saving audio for «when I know more.» Exam listening is slow, but if you never trained your ear, you fail from panic, not vocabulary.
Routine: 5–10 minutes/day of HSK 1 dialogues. Listen without text first; then read; then shadow phrase by phrase.
Tones: practice minimal pairs (mā / má / mǎ / mà). One wrong tone turns «mother» into «horse.» Record yourself and compare before you add more words.
Realistic 8-week plan
Weeks 1–2: pinyin + tones + greetings, numbers, family. Goal: introduce yourself and count to 100 confidently.
Weeks 3–4: time, food, basic verbs, 吗 / 的 / 在. Start daily listening. Write 5 characters/day.
Weeks 5–6: places, simple shopping, frequent questions. 6-turn mini dialogues. First short listening mock.
Weeks 7–8: intensive SRS review, 2–3 mock exams, leech list (words failed 3+ times), tone fixes.
If you only have 15 minutes: 8 min SRS + 5 min listening + 2 min saying 3 phrases aloud.
Common beginner mistakes
Word-for-word translation from English (forgetting Chinese has no gender or conjugation).
Ignoring tones because «people understand me anyway» — on the exam they pick the correct option, not your intent.
Cramming 80 words on a weekend with no review — by Thursday they are gone.
Recognition-only study with no production — listening and speaking suffer.
Mixing up 他 / 她 / 它 in fast reading — practice with short gender/reference phrases.
Checklist: ready for the exam?
You recognize and use ≥90% of HSK 1 vocabulary in phrases.
You answer 吗 questions without mental translation.
You understand slow audio of short dialogues on first or calm second listen.
You write the 30–40 most frequent level characters from memory.
You completed at least two mock exams and errors are specific review points, not panic.
Next step (practice and HSK 2)
When the checklist is green, start HSK 1–2 with the same lists and listening, or stay on paper and official audio.
