Chinese grammar for HSK
Chinese grammar: tones, pinyin, 的 and 了, classifiers, and word order. Premium tutor can check sentences — not a grammar-checker SaaS.
Chinese grammar surprises you with what it lacks (conjugations) and what it demands (tones, classifiers, word order). These five guides cover the blocks people search at HSK 1–3. If you want someone to check Chinese grammar, that is the Premium tutor on your sentences — this hub is explanation, not a standalone checker.
Start with pinyin and tones if you still guess at romanization. Then word order, classifiers, and 的 and 了. Six-level registration is on chinesetest.cn; classic word counts are on Wikipedia HSK; the framework sits with CLEC.
Key takeaways
Chinese grammar is word order, particles, and classifiers, not verb endings.
Teaching note. A 200-word rule list will not let you use 了 in a real sentence. That is why the through-line is 三杯茶, not five cloned blurbs.
Mandarin does not conjugate verbs. Time, aspect, and mood show up as adverbs, word order, and particles. That is why 了 and 的 matter more than mapping every Spanish or English tense onto a Chinese ending.
Tones are lexical: they change the word, not just the mood. 买 (mǎi, to buy) and 卖 (mài, to sell) will not be rescued by context if you say the wrong one at a stall.
A classifier almost always sits between number and noun. 三个书 is wrong; 三本书 (sān běn shū, three books) is what HSK 1 expects.
This hub explains. It does not auto-correct your writing. If you want a sentence checked, that is the Premium tutor in the app, with honest limits — not an unlimited grammar-checker product.
What this section is (and is not)
These pages are study guides for searches like Chinese grammar, HSK grammar, and Mandarin sentence structure. Each guide uses hanzi, pinyin, and a gloss, plus typical learner mistakes and a 15-minute drill.
They are not the secret exam paper. Chinese Testing International publishes that. They are not a 200-item classifier dictionary. They do not replace the HSK vocabulary lists or scene phrases.
They are not the blog either. The Chinese blog is method and product. This cluster is structure: how it sounds, how it lines up, which particle sits in the middle.
If you arrived on «chinese grammar checker» or «check chinese grammar», read this first: a generic checker does not know your HSK level or whether 了 is aspect or a change of state. These pages teach the pattern; the app can comment on one of your sentences. You register for the exam at the official site, not here.
A realistic study order
Week 1: pinyin and the hard initials (j, q, x, zh, ch, sh, r, ü). Without that, HSK 1 listening is a lottery. The pinyin guide ties each sound to a character already in HSK 1.
Weeks 1–2: the four tones, the neutral tone, and sandhi on 不, 一, and third tone + third tone. Do not «sing» whole dialogues. Record minimal pairs.
Weeks 2–3: SVO, time before the verb, place with 在, questions that do not invert the subject. English sometimes copies «I yesterday coffee drink»; reading items will not forgive that scramble.
Week 3: high-frequency classifiers (个, 本, 张, 只, 条, 杯, 件) and 两 versus 二. Learn them glued to the noun, not as a naked list.
Week 4: 的 for possession and attributes, 了 for aspect and change, then 的 / 得 / 地 when you start writing HSK 2 sentences. That is the «de and le» search.
Fifteen to thirty minutes a day beats a three-hour Saturday. HSK 1–2 can be studied free in the app with daily limits. We do not promise fluency in a month.
How this shows up on the HSK
Classic six-level HSK 1 is about 150 words, listening, and reading. You will see 吗, 的, 在, number + classifier, and short SVO. Level detail: HSK 1 guide. Registration: chinesetest.cn.
HSK 2–3 adds 了, degree complements with 得, more classifiers, and a little 把. Classic counts are summarized on Wikipedia HSK. If your center uses the nine-band outline from CLEC, confirm the paper; do not mix both syllabi in the same week.
Exam grammar is not an essay. It is choosing the particle that fits, hearing the tone on a two-syllable word, and not parking time after the object. These guides train patterns, not metalanguage.
Mistakes a grammar checker will miss
Dropping the classifier: 我有三书. An English checker often lets it through. A native hears it at once.
Stamping 了 on every verb that would be past in English. 我昨天吃饭了 can be fine; 我是学生了 almost never is, unless a change just happened.
Putting 的 between a short adjective and a noun when the pattern does not want it — or dropping 的 in 红色的车 (hóngsè de chē, red car).
Reading toneless pinyin and filling it with English intonation. The official listening track will not wait.
Mixing 买 and 卖, 问 and 闻, 四 and 十. That is phonology, not classroom «grammar». The tone guide comes before particles for a reason.
How to use the five guides without cloning one skeleton
Pinyin is the transcription system. It does not replace characters. Every example syllable sits next to hanzi.
Tones is applied phonology: four contours, neutral tone, sandhi, minimal pairs. If you only read the rule and never record, it does not count.
Word order is SVO plus time, place, manner, 也/都, and the 把 slot. That is the page for chinese word order.
Classifiers is 量词 for HSK 1–2 and the 三个书 error. It is not a catalogue of 200 measures.
的 and 了 covers 的, 了, and 的/得/地 because they sound alike and the English slug is de-and-le. If you mix 得 and 地 on an HSK 3 mock, come back here.
When an example clicks, say it aloud and park it on a card with audio. Word inventory: HSK 1 vocabulary. Month-one plan: start from zero. Spanish-speaker interference lives on Chinese for Spanish speakers.
One sentence that uses all five guides
Do not treat the five URLs as textbook chapters. Build one line and ask which piece failed.
昨天我在家喝了三杯茶 (zuótiān wǒ zài jiā hē le sān bēi chá, yesterday I drank three cups of tea at home).
Pinyin and tones: if 了 sounds like the le in 快乐, or 茶 loses the second tone, the miss is not word order. Go back to pinyin or tones.
Order: 昨天 and 在家 sit left of the verb. If you write 我喝茶在家昨天, the page you need is word order, not more vocabulary.
Classifier: 三杯茶. 三个茶 is the same miss as 三个书. That lives in classifiers.
Particles: 了 here marks a closed event, not every English past. 的 does not belong in this line. If you sprinkle 的 anyway, open 的 and 了.
When you can say that line cold, you are no longer reading a stub. You are using the cluster.
How to know a guide is enough (and when it is not)
A guide is enough when you can produce three new examples without copying the page. If you only recognise the sample, you are still in recognition. HSK 1 reading may forgive that; listening will not.
It is not enough if 买 and 卖 still collide, or if 了 lands on every verb. Opening another theory tab will not fix that. Pairs will, and a day with no automatic 了 will.
This hub is also not enough if you need the exam paper, fees, or centres. That is chinesetest.cn. Classic level counts: Wikipedia HSK. Framework: CLEC.
If you want a week-by-week plan, not a rule: start from zero and the HSK 1 guide. If you want Spanish-speaker interference (ser/estar, 了, tones), Chinese for Spanish speakers.
This hub explains patterns. HSK 1–2 can be studied in the app with daily limits; start at login. The Premium tutor can comment on one of your sentences. Official registration does not run through this site.
A 15-minute drill (today)
Minutes 1–5: read six syllables from the tone guide aloud, record, compare with native audio if you have it.
Minutes 6–10: write three SVO sentences with time and place. Template: 昨天我在家喝茶 (zuótiān wǒ zài jiā hē chá, yesterday I drank tea at home).
Minutes 11–15: add one classifier and either 的 or 了. Do not run all five guides in one sitting. One applied rule beats five highlighted ones.
If you have one minute left, say the long line from this page: 昨天我在家喝了三杯茶. If one piece cracks, open only that child guide. Do not open all five.
The 4 tones of Mandarin: practical guide
The four Mandarin tones, neutral tone, sandhi, and minimal pairs. Record, compare, then add words. Classic HSK 1 is about 150 words.
Chinese word order: SVO, time, and place
Mandarin word order: subject-verb-object, then time, place, manner, 也/都, and the 把 slot. Short HSK 1–2 patterns, not inversion drills.
Chinese classifiers (量词): beginner guide
Mandarin classifiers (量词) for HSK 1–2: 个, 本, 张, 只, 条, 杯, 件, and 两 versus 二. Why 三个书 fails. Learn each measure with the noun, then drill for 15 minutes.
的 and 了 in Chinese — plus 得 and 地
的 and 了 first (possession, aspect, change of state), then 得 and 地. The de-and-le search, HSK 1–3 patterns, and a 15-minute drill.
Pinyin: complete guide to reading Mandarin
Hanyu Pinyin from zero: initials, finals, ü, j/q/x, zh/ch/sh, tone marks, and why pinyin is not a substitute for characters. Then tones.
FAQ
Does Chinese even have grammar?
Yes. It does not conjugate, but it marks aspect (了), attribution (的), measure (classifiers), and a rigid time–place order. People who say «Chinese has no grammar» usually fail HSK 2 reading.
Is this a Chinese grammar checker?
No. These pages explain. The Premium tutor can comment on a sentence of yours. There is no separate unlimited grammar-checker product.
Where do I start if I cannot read pinyin yet?
The pinyin guide, then tones. Do not start with classifiers or HSK 4.
Are 的 and 了 the same as 得 and 地?
的 and 了 are the high-search pair (possession/attribute and aspect). 得 and 地 sound like 的 and show up in HSK 2–3. The particles guide covers all four.
Where do I register for the HSK?
Only on chinesetest.cn. This site is not a test center. The framework is driven by CLEC.
