The 4 tones of Mandarin: practical guide
How tones work in Chinese, common learner mistakes, and exercises to master tonal pinyin.
Overview
Tones are not optional — they change meaning. For many learners, the hardest part under pressure is telling the second and third tones apart.
The four tones
First tone (ā): level and long. Second (á): rises like a question. Third (ǎ): dips then rises. Fourth (à): falls decisively.
The neutral tone appears in frequent particles like 吗 (ma) or 的 (de).
Common learner mistakes
Mixing up 买 (mǎi, buy) and 卖 (mài, sell) is classic. Practice minimal pairs aloud.
Do not try to «sing» whole sentences — master syllable by syllable, then speed up.
How to practice
Listen, repeat, and record yourself. Immediate feedback trains your ear faster than reading rules.
Alternate single-syllable cards with short HSK 1 phrases.
