How to start learning Mandarin from zero

From zero here means: you cannot read pinyin reliably, you cannot tell tones under pressure, and you cannot introduce yourself in a sentence. If you already recognize 你好 in an app but cannot say it, that is still zero production.

Do not start with artistic calligraphy or jump to HSK 4 “to go faster.” Classic HSK 1 asks for about 150 words. This site publishes a longer list on purpose (public inventory: 12,432 words). Study the paper your center will test.

The six-level bands (150, 300, 600, 1,200, 2,500, 5,000) are summarized on Wikipedia HSK. Dates: chinesetest.cn. CLEC runs the framework. This site is not a test center.

Before you memorize characters, fix your ear. The four tones change the word: 妈 (mā, mother), 麻 (má, hemp), 马 (mǎ, horse), 骂 (mà, to scold). If you read them the same, the rest of the month sits on sand.

15–20 minute sessions: 8 of minimal pairs out loud, 5 of the syllabary (j/q/x, zh/ch/sh, ü), 2 recording yourself. Compare 问 (wèn, to ask) and 闻 (wén, to smell) before adding ten new words.

Do not keep pinyin as a permanent crutch. Use it to enter; drop it when the syllable already sounds right. The tones guide covers the ear; this page covers study order.

Useful blocks: greetings, numbers, family, time, food, places. Every item enters a sentence. Not 我 alone: 我是学生 (wǒ shì xuésheng, I am a student) and 我叫… (wǒ jiào…, my name is…).

Pace: 10–15 new words a day inside a sentence, plus 15 minutes of SRS. Add slow listening the same day: if you only read, the exam and the street sound like another language.

A 4–6 turn mini dialogue at the end of each block. Example: 你好。你是老师吗？我不是老师，我是学生。 Inventory: HSK 1 list. Paper method: HSK 1 guide.

8 minutes of due flashcards (SRS), 5 of short listening, 5 saying 3 sentences aloud, 2 of one new character with stroke order. That fits a break. Three hours on Sunday do not replace it.

Measure what you can say and understand, not cards seen. If you recognize 谢谢 (xièxie, thanks) on screen and do not say it at the till, the metric is lying.

If you already bounce between Duolingo, Anki, and YouTube, pick one route: level vocabulary, audio at that level, one sentence said. The comparisons say what to leave out.

Word-for-word translation from English or Spanish (Chinese does not conjugate or mark gender like those languages). Calquing “already” with 了 in every sentence.

Ignoring tones because “people still understand.” On the exam they pick the correct option, not your intent. Cramming 80 words on a weekend with no review: they are gone by Thursday.

Recognition-only study. Classic HSK 1 is listening + reading; the street asks for production. Record. Compare. Then add more lexicon.

You tell the four tones apart in minimal pairs without looking at pinyin. You introduce yourself: name, nationality, whether you are a student.

You count and ask prices: 多少钱 (duōshao qián, how much?). You understand a slow 4-turn dialogue on the first listen or a calm repeat.

When that is green, open the HSK 1 guide for format and the 8-week plan. Do not mix the 2021 nine-band outline with the six-level paper in the same week.

Days 1–2: 你好 (nǐ hǎo, hello). 谢谢 (xièxie, thanks). 不客气 (bú kèqi, you’re welcome). 对不起 (duìbuqǐ, sorry). Say each twice; then without looking at pinyin.

Days 3–4: 我叫… (wǒ jiào…, my name is…). 我是学生 (wǒ shì xuésheng, I am a student). 你是老师吗？ (nǐ shì lǎoshī ma, are you a teacher?). 不是 (bú shì, no).

Days 5–7: 这个多少钱？ (zhège duōshao qián, how much is this?). 我要这个 (wǒ yào zhège, I want this). 我不知道 (wǒ bù zhīdào, I don’t know). If any tone comes out flat, return to week 1 before opening more list.
