How long does it take to learn Chinese?

“Learn Chinese” can mean ordering food, passing HSK 3, or negotiating a contract. Mixing those goals inflates or sinks any calendar. Pick the paper first.

Speeds you up: 15–30 minutes every day, vocabulary in sentences, listening at the same level, one sentence said aloud, tone feedback. A tutor (human or the app’s AI) cuts weeks of fossilized error.

Pads the calendar: weekend marathons, random lists, five apps at once, jumping to HSK 4 without audible HSK 1. Translating from English and stuffing 了 for every “already” also pads it.

If your native language is Spanish, simple SVO helps; tones and characters do not. That map is in Chinese for Spanish speakers. It does not magically subtract months; it avoids a month lost to calques.

At 15 minutes/day (~1.75 h/week) HSK 1 stretches toward 6 months. At 45 minutes/day you can approach 3 months if you do not skip the ear. Doubling hours does not double level: the ceiling is what you can produce the next day.

Count only time with output or SRS. Watching a Chinese video with English subtitles barely counts. Shadowing an 8-line dialogue does.

Before you pay for an exam, sit two mocks. If the miss is listening panic, the fix is not “more characters”: it is more audio. Register only on chinesetest.cn.

Pick a level, a tentative date 4–8 months out, and a routine that survives a bad Tuesday. Review at day 30: if you cannot say 10 sentences from the current block, the calendar was theatre.

If your goal is “conversation,” read what HSK level is conversational before you book an intensive. HSK 4 sounds like conversation; it is not negotiating a contract or watching a newscast without subtitles.

These bands are not a contract. A native speaker of Japanese or Vietnamese may move faster on characters or tones; a Spanish speaker usually pays the ear. Adjust to your weekly recording, not a course slogan.

The U.S. Foreign Service Institute lists Mandarin as a Category IV language: on the order of 2,200 classroom hours for an English speaker toward professional working proficiency. That is not HSK 1 and not “travel conversation.” It is a diplomatic ceiling.
