How to learn Chinese faster: 10 strategies

Ten ways to raise level per hour: daily frequency, HSK in sentences, SRS, tones, listening, and one tool path. No magic shortcuts and no HSK 6 in a summer.

Learning Chinese “fast” is not a trick: it is stopping hours that do not raise your level. These ten strategies cut waste. None of them replace the ~150 items of classic HSK 1 or registration on chinesetest.cn.

In this guide

What speed is not

It is not jumping to HSK 4 in month one. It is not a 3,000-card deck with no audio. It is not watching shows with English subtitles and calling that immersion.

The six-level paper and its bands are on Wikipedia HSK. CLEC runs the framework. Study your center’s paper; do not mix the 2021 nine-band outline into the same week.

1. Daily frequency, not a marathon

25 minutes every day beats 3 hours on Sunday. Chinese rewards short reunions with the same item. If you only have 15 minutes, cut new content, not SRS.

If Sunday is your only long block, split it: 20 minutes Saturday, 20 Sunday, and 10 on two weeknights. The ear does not store a marathon; it stores repeats of the same 谢谢.

2. HSK inventory, not internet lists

Use the level you will actually sit. Classic HSK 1 ~150 words: guide and list. This site publishes 12,432 words; that is not the paper. Random is slow.

One week, one inventory. Mixing “useful travel words” with the HSK 1 paper in the same 20 minutes is how neither finishes. Saturday can be phrases; the other days, the level.

3. Sentences, not isolated words

要 changes in 我要这个 (wǒ yào zhège, I want this) and 要不要 (yào bu yào, do you want it?). A word in Anki with no sentence is spelling. The phrases hub gives context; lists give inventory.

Same test with 是: 我是学生 (wǒ shì xuésheng) is not 有 in 我有一本书. If you cannot place the word in a 5-syllable sentence, do not mark it learned.

4. SRS every day

The interval is the saving. 15 minutes of due cards beat relearning. If you use Anki, the deck needs audio and a sentence; if you use the app, do not clone the same item across three decks.

Leeches (missed 3+ times) leave the new-item pile and return as a spoken sentence. Speed is cleaning errors, not adding 40 cards on Tuesday.

5. Speak aloud from day one

Say 你好 (nǐ hǎo), 谢谢 (xièxie), 多少钱 (duōshao qián) until they come out without translating. Thirty seconds of recording beats another list. The self-learner who waits to “know more” does not speed up: they postpone the bottleneck.

Protocol: three sentences, one file, Monday and Friday. If Friday sounds the same, do not open HSK 2. Self-study detail: learn Chinese alone.

6. Listening at the same level, one step above

HSK 1 audio while you study HSK 1. A current-affairs podcast in month one is ego, not input. Raise the level when a slow dialogue no longer scares you.

First pass with no transcript. Second with text. Third saying turn B yourself. That is listening that produces; English subtitles are not.

7. Tones as meaning, not accent

妈 / 麻 / 马 / 骂 are not nuances. Train pairs. Ear lab: tones. Without this, every extra vocabulary hour builds on an error.

The pair that most exposes a Spanish speaker: 买 (mǎi, to buy) and 卖 (mài, to sell). If they sound the same on a recording, that hour was not fast.

8. One tool path

One list, one SRS, one audio, one place for questions. Five apps is five beginnings. Comparisons exist to decide what to cut, not what to add.

Cut one today: the second streak app, the YouTube channel titled “HSK 4 in 30 days,” or the 3,000-card deck with no audio. Three serious tools beat collecting ten.

9. Output before more input

Do not open the next block until you can say three sentences from the current one. 我是学生。你是老师吗?我不是。 That filter is more honest than “I have 200 cards.”

If you recognize 老师 on screen and it does not come out in a sentence, the block is not closed. The next app chapter can wait; your ear does not get paid for completed modules.

10. Weekly mock and leech hunt

A short listening mock each week. Words missed 3+ times leave the new-item pile and return as a sentence. Before the exam: two mocks and chinesetest.cn, not another app.

The mock measures the paper, not your streak. If listening is under 60%, do not raise the list. First-month order: start from zero. Calendar: how long it takes.

How the ten fit (and what to cut today)

If you only do one thing this week: frequency + SRS + three sentences. If you do two: add same-level listening. The rest waits. Ten strategies at once is another way to have no path.

Cut today: a second Anki deck, a YouTube course titled “HSK 4 in 30 days,” and any list that is not the level you will sit. Honest inventory: HSK vocabulary.

Example of a well-paid hour: 15 min SRS, 10 min of 你好 / 谢谢 / 多少钱 / 我要这个 out loud, 10 min of an HSK 1 dialogue. Example of a wasted hour: 60 min of random characters with no audio.

When you want an exam date, do not speed up with another trick: two mocks and chinesetest.cn. The paper count is still on Wikipedia HSK.

Speed measured honestly: sentences you can still say tomorrow without looking. Not cards seen, not an app streak, not “modules completed.” If tomorrow you cannot say 谢谢 and 多少钱, the week was not fast.

For Spanish speakers the bottleneck is usually tone, not SVO grammar. Do not spend the extra hour on another list until 买 and 卖 split on a recording. Map: Chinese for Spanish speakers.
