Yes, you can learn Chinese alone. What you cannot do is improvise the order and expect classroom results. Without structure, self-study piles up passive vocabulary: you recognize 谢谢 on screen and go quiet at the till.

In this guide

The short answer, without romance

You can cover vocabulary, written grammar, listening, and reading with well-ordered HSK materials. Thousands pass HSK 3–4 with no academy. The cost is discipline, not mysterious talent.

What a book will not correct: tone 2 vs tone 3 under pressure, and the shame of speaking. That is where self-study stalls. A human tutor, a short exchange, or the app’s AI tutor closes that hole.

The official paper and dates live on chinesetest.cn. Classic counts are on Wikipedia HSK. CLEC runs the framework. This site is not a test center.

What you can do alone (and how)

Level inventory: public lists. Paper method: HSK guides. Grammar blocks: grammar hub. Survival phrases: phrases hub.

Daily SRS (Anki or in-app flashcards). Anki for Chinese is an interval engine, not a teacher. If the deck has no audio and no sentence, you are memorizing spelling.

Listening: the same level as your list, not a news podcast in month one. Production: 3 sentences aloud a day, recorded. Minimum example: 我要这个 (wǒ yào zhège, I want this) versus 要不要 (yào bu yào, do you want it?).

Where self-study usually breaks

Tones without feedback. 买 (mǎi, to buy) and 卖 (mài, to sell) are not “almost the same.” Without recording yourself, the error fossilizes and HSK 2 will not clean it easily.

Five resources at once. A month on Duolingo, a month on YouTube, a month in a 400-page grammar. Pick one route: level → list → audio → sentence. Comparisons exist to drop tools, not to collect them.

Avoiding speaking “until I know more.” That more never arrives. Month one already needs 你好, 谢谢, 多少钱. The start guide puts those blocks on a calendar.

A weekly routine if you have no class

Monday–Friday: 20 minutes (SRS + listening + 3 sentences). Saturday: 25 minutes on a new mini dialogue. Sunday: 15 minutes of leeches (missed 3+ times), not new content.

Once a month: a short mock at your level. If listening is under 60%, do not raise the list. If vocabulary is green and you cannot produce a sentence, the hole is output, not Anki.

When to pay for help: if after 6 weeks your tones are still flat on a recording, or HSK 3 is close and you cannot hold a spoken paragraph. A tutor twice a month beats another app subscription.

Self-study does not mean isolated

Use official sources for the framework, not forums for dates. A Spanish- or English-speaking community helps you start; the audio still has to be real Mandarin.

One concrete day, so you do not improvise

07:40 — 8 minutes of SRS (due cards only). 07:48 — one 6-line HSK 1 dialogue, no transcript the first time. 07:54 — say 我要这个 and 多少钱 on a recording. 07:56 — one character (人, 日, or 是) with stroke order. Stop.

If you travel, swap the Saturday dialogue for travel phrases, not every day: the HSK path stays the spine.

If after a month you cannot produce 我叫… / 我是学生 / 你是老师吗?, the problem is not “missing an app.” It is missing production. There a tutor twice a month beats another deck.

The official frame does not change because you study alone: Wikipedia HSK, CLEC, register on chinesetest.cn.

A minimum stack that scales: one level list, one SRS, audio at the same level, and one place for tone questions (grammar). Everything else is optional in the first quarter.

If you work or travel, do not drop the HSK spine: add a phrases block on Saturday. Mixing business, travel, and exam in the same 20-minute session is how none of them finish.

A 30-second recording protocol

Pick three sentences from the current block. Example: 你好。我叫…。这个多少钱? Record on Monday and Friday. If Friday still sounds flat, do not open a new list: the hole is tone, not inventory.

Listen back without looking at pinyin. If you cannot recognize your own 谢谢, SRS is lying: it recognizes characters, it does not produce. There a tutor twice a month beats another Anki deck.

Keep the file with the date. Self-study without a teacher needs a file, not a feeling. When five Fridays in a row sound different, move to the HSK 1 guide. Until then, do not add a sixth app to the stack.

Register and check dates on Chinese Testing International. The framework is run by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (formerly Hanban).

Put it into practice

If you lack a teacher for the ear and the order, the app covers the HSK path, SRS, and an AI tutor. The official exam is not registered here.
