The particles 的, 得, and 地 in Chinese
When to use 的, 得, and 地 — clear differences and examples for learners.
Overview
Three particles that sound alike (de) but are written differently and do different jobs. They are among the first big confusions in HSK 2–3.
的 (possession and attribute)
我的书 (wǒ de shū) = my book. 红色的车 (hóngsè de chē) = red car.
Links nouns or adjectives to what they describe.
得 and 地
跑得很快 (pǎo de hěn kuài) = run very fast (complement). 慢慢地走 (mànman de zǒu) = walk slowly (adverb).
If it modifies how a verb is done, it is usually 地; if it complements result, 得.
