You do not need another map of “how to learn Chinese.” You need a clock. Twenty minutes fit after work. Two hours on Saturday often do not, which is why they get abandoned. This routine is a fixed block: 8 minutes of SRS, 5 of listening, 5 of output, and 2 of tones. If you only have 10, you cut new words, not review.
The long map still lives in how to learn Chinese. The HSK guides say what each level contains. The job here is surviving a workday without pretending you will magically have an hour tomorrow.
Key takeaways
- A fixed 20 minutes beats a two-hour Saturday. The useful block is 8 of SRS, 5 of listening, 5 of output, and 2 of tones.
- Ten minutes still count if you cut new words, not review. Spaced repetition (SRS) is the last thing you skip.
- Thirty days will not make you speak. They can make a habit. Classic HSK 1 is about 150 words; fluency does not fit in a month.
- Forty new words, a second streak app, and a ‘definitive method’ video do not fit inside the session.

Why 20 minutes beat the weekend binge
Mandarin does not slip because you are lazy. It slips because the gap between 四 (sì, four) and the next time you hear it is too long, and your brain flattens it into 十 (shí, ten). A short session most days shortens that gap. A Sunday marathon lengthens it.
Twenty minutes also cap the damage. In a “motivated” hour you cram 40 new words, a video, and zero queue. By Friday you cannot tell 问 (wèn, to ask) from 闻 (wén, to smell / to hear of). The short clock stops you collecting.
This is not productivity magic. It is memory arithmetic. The HSK 1 that chinesetest.cn describes is about 150 words. At 8 new words a day with no review, you “finish” the list in three weeks and have forgotten it in four. At 4 new ones and 8 minutes of queue, the list takes longer and stays.
If your life will not give you 20, drop to 10. Do not raise it to 45 “when I have time.” That time does not arrive.
The clock: 8 SRS, 5 listening, 5 output, 2 tones
Set a timer. Do not renegotiate the order for the first 14 days.
Eight minutes: the SRS queue. SRS is spaced repetition: cards come back just as you were about to forget them. Only due cards plus a small new-word cap, 3 to 5 if you are in HSK 1. Hanzi, pinyin, gloss. If you miss, you do not “look again”: you mark it wrong and move. The work is retrieval, not relaxing on easy cards.
Five minutes: listening. One short dialogue at your level, without pausing every syllable. At HSK 1, 你好,我是老师 (nǐ hǎo, wǒ shì lǎoshī) is enough. Listen, repeat, listen again. The goal is not 100% comprehension. It is making exam speed stop feeling like science fiction.
Five minutes: output. You say or write 4 sentences with words from the queue. Not a diary. Example: 我要这个 (wǒ yào zhège, I want this) and 这个有点儿贵 (zhège yǒudiǎnr guì, this is a bit expensive). Record yourself if you can. If not, write it by hand once. Output is what streak apps usually skip.
Two minutes: tones. One minimal pair. mā / má / mǎ / mà on 妈麻马骂, or the pair you missed today. Not a phonetics course. A 120-second ear.
Then you stop. No “one more video.” Stopping is part of the method.
What does not fit in the session
Three thieves. First: another streak app “for just 3 minutes.” Those 3 minutes come out of the 8 of SRS. Second: 40 new words. Third: hunting the definitive method on YouTube inside the window.
Calligraphy practice, a language exchange that does not show up, and a Reddit thread about Anki also do not fit. Anki works. Building the deck is not this session. Today you run the queue. Tool debates are for Saturday, if the habit is still there.
If you study from PDFs, the thief is “I’ll just download more lists.” This site’s HSK vocabulary is 12,432 public words. You will not swallow them. Open HSK 1, not the ocean. The HSK 1 guide tells you what that level tests; do not read it inside the 20 minutes.
A blunt rule: if an activity does not make you retrieve a word or produce sound, it does not enter the clock.
How to compress to 10 minutes (and what you cut)
“How to learn Chinese in 10 minutes” is an honest query. Ten minutes do not teach a language. They do stop the interval from blowing out.
Cut in this order. First, new words: zero. Second, listening: one audio, one repeat. Third, output: two sentences, not four. What you do not cut: the SRS queue. If you only do one thing, do the queue.
A 10-minute HSK 1 block can be: 7 minutes of due cards, 3 minutes saying 我叫… and 我要… out loud. Ugly. Stable.
When you have 20 again, do not “catch up” 40 extra cards. Return to the usual clock. SRS debt is paid across days, not in a binge. The binge fakes progress and leaves you stiff the next morning.
If 10 minutes also fail three days in a row, the problem is not Chinese. It is the hole in the calendar. Pin the session to a real anchor: coffee, the train, after you leave the phone in another room. The anchor matters more than the app.
The myth of learning Chinese in 30 days
You can do 30 sessions. That is a habit. It is not conversation, not HSK 4, not fluency.
Classic HSK 1 is about 150 words, with pinyin on the paper, in the frame summarised on Wikipedia’s HSK page. Twenty minutes a day for 30 days is 10 clock hours. Ten hours do not cover 150 words with listening and tone. They cover the start, if you do not collect. If what you want is “I can already speak,” read what HSK level is conversational before you believe a challenge.
HSK 3 already asks for about 600. HSK 6, about 5,000. The Foreign Service Institute places Mandarin near 2,200 classroom hours for professional working proficiency (FSI page). A 30-day challenge is selling something else.
What you can do in a month: not quit. Tell 四 from 十 more often than you flatten them. Say 10 sentences without looking at your phone. That is boring to advertise. It is the only thing that later scales.
If an ad promises fluency in a month, it is not your plan. It is their funnel.
A concrete HSK 1 session (today)
Minutes 0–8. Cards: 你, 好, 我, 是, 老师, 要, 这个. If 是 (shì, to be) comes out slow, mark it wrong. If 老师 (lǎoshī, teacher) comes first time, good — and do not study it “a bit more for fun.”
Minutes 8–13. Audio of a greeting and a job. 你好,我是老师. No transcript the second time.
Minutes 13–18. You say: 我是学生 (wǒ shì xuésheng, I am a student). 我要这个. 这个有点儿贵. If you snag on 点儿, that is the tone card.
Minutes 18–20. mā má mǎ mà once each, slowly, then at sentence speed.
Close the app. Write one line: “20, queue done.” You do not need a journal. You need the tick.
That session does not replace the official exam. The CLEC will not congratulate you for the timer. You can still know whether the day counted.
How to know the routine is working (and when to change it)
After 14 days, look at three signals, not the streak. One: the SRS queue is no longer a wall of red cards every morning. Two: you hear 我要这个 and react before you read the gloss. Three: you can say those sentences without looking at the pinyin. If all three are failing, do not level up. Cut new words.
After 30 days, if the habit holds, add a short mock on Saturday — outside the daily clock — or a slightly longer dialogue. Do not add a second app.
If the queue grows without end, you have added too many new cards. The fix is cruel and correct: new words to zero until the queue shrinks. That hurts more than a motivation video. It is the only fix.
Chinese Trainer fits if you want that queue already built by HSK band, with listening and writing in the same account. The inventory is in what’s inside the app. It does not fit if you want a three-minute game. There is one CTA: do today’s session on free HSK 1–2. If the clock holds after a week, continue. If it does not, the problem was not another app’s mascot. It was not having a clock.

- Apply one method today, not a second streak.
- Measure one pair or one mock, not XP.

Frequently asked questions
Can you learn Chinese in 10 minutes a day?
As a floor, yes. As a miracle, no. In 10 minutes run the SRS queue and a couple of sentences out loud. Cut new words. Ten minutes every day beats an hour on Sunday.
Can you learn Chinese in 30 days?
You can bed in a habit and a handful of HSK 1 sentences. You will not converse or pass HSK 4. Official HSK 1 is about 150 words; that already needs weeks of review, not a challenge.
What is Chinese SRS and why does it go first?
SRS is spaced repetition: cards come back just as you were about to forget them. In Chinese that stops you flattening pairs like 四 and 十. If you only do new lessons, you collect. If you do the queue, you keep.
Do I have to use a specific app?
No. Anki works if you maintain the deck. An app with a ready-made queue saves that work. What does not work is adding a second streak ‘just because’ inside the same 20 minutes.
