HSK 3.0 vs the classic six-level HSK: what changes for 2026–2027

Open your center's session on chinesetest.cn before you open another vocabulary list. The test name on the form wins. If it still reads classic HSK 3 or HSK 4, you're in the six-level world. If it talks about bands, HSK 7–9, or a speaking paper with the same number as the written one, you're on another map.

A kitchen line does not pick your syllabus: 我要这个 (wǒ yào zhège, I want this one). It works on a trip. It does not tell you whether your center still runs classic six-level HSK or already labels HSK 3.0.

Do not treat another city's calendar as yours. The Business Confucius Institute at the Athens University of Economics and Business published a notice: Chinese Testing International announced a worldwide HSK 3.0 session on 13 December 2026, and their 13 December session would use HSK 3.0, with enrolment via chinesetest.cn. That is one center's notice (confucius.aueb.gr). It is not your city's date. It is not a fee.

Secondary blogs (HSK Mock, HSK GO) repeat a WeChat announcement from 8–9 September 2026 saying January 2027 is when 3.0 becomes the standard. Attribute that to those blogs plus the Athens notice. Do not write "CTI confirmed" as if you read the WeChat post yourself.

If your center has published nothing new, keep the paper already named on the open registration. Panic-mixing lists usually costs more than waiting a week to read the form.

Write the test name on a sticky note next to your desk. When a friend sends a screenshot from another city, compare strings before you change your deck. Different labels mean different homework.

The classic six-level written HSK (often called HSK 2.0) has been the live paper for levels 1–6 for years. Wikipedia's HSK article summarizes cumulative word targets of about 150, 300, 600, 1,200, 2,500, and 5,000. That is the map behind this site's guides and most mocks you already know.

Nine bands are not "six levels plus three extras at the end". They cut vocabulary, writing, and, in recent tables, speaking differently. If you study classic HSK 4 and then open an 11,000-word list "because I saw HSK 7-9", you're training anxiety, not the audio for your session.

A typical classic jump is HSK 2 to HSK 3. HSK 2 lives on short lines. HSK 3 wants more story. 我昨天下午去超市 (wǒ zuótiān xiàwǔ qù chāoshì, yesterday afternoon I went to the supermarket) already needs time and place. That fits the HSK 3 guide. It does not fit a bands 7–9 deck.

"What level is conversational" is a different job (what HSK level is conversational). Here the question is drier: what string is on your registration?

On 1 April 2021, China's Ministry of Education published the standard 《国际中文教育中文水平等级标准》: three stages, nine bands. Wikipedia's table for that 2021 syllabus lists cumulative words as band 1: 500; 2: 1,272; 3: 2,245; 4: 3,245; 5: 4,316; 6: 5,456; bands 7–9 together: 11,092.

The same page also lists syllables and characters. For 2021 band 1, Wikipedia shows 300 characters to recognize and 300 to write. Classic HSK 1 does not test writing the same way, and pinyin is printed on the paper. Do not say "HSK 1 always requires writing 300 hanzi". Say which document you mean.

Higher bands in the new frame also bring translation. That does not mean your 2026 center will hand you a translation paper next month. It means the 2021 teaching standard no longer fits "listening and reading only, like classic HSK 1–2".

Do not present those 2021 word counts as the live exam paper unless you label them as the 2021 standard, not as "what your center sits next month". The live paper is whatever chinesetest.cn and the center list for that session.

If someone sends you a "HSK 3.0 2021" PDF and a "HSK 3.0 2025" PDF, treat them as two moments. Read them apart. Do not build one deck from the highest number in each column.

Wikipedia (section "HSK 3.0 (2025)", retrieved for this draft) says an official HSK 3.0 exam syllabus was released on 15 November 2025 at the 2025 World Chinese Language Conference. It took effect on 18 November 2025. A global trial ran on 31 January 2026. As of July 2026, Wikipedia said the full rollout was not yet in place.

That 2025 syllabus table on Wikipedia lowers beginner and intermediate word targets versus 2021. Cumulative words: 300, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 3,600, 5,400, and 11,000 for bands 7–9. Speaking enters the structure from level 3 in that table.

Cite Wikipedia. Then return to the portal. The live paper is still what chinesetest.cn and your center list. Do not merge the 2021 counts and the 2025 counts into one list.

Why mixing hurts: if you grind toward 500 words "because 2021 band 1 said 500" while your center still sells classic HSK 1 (~150), you inflate the deck without touching the audio format. If you already sit a paper with speaking paired from level 3, a reading-only deck is not enough.

This site's public vocabulary inventory is 12,432 words. HSK 1–6 lists follow the classic bands. HSK 7+ is an advanced list, not an exam guide. Those 12,432 words are not the chinesetest.cn paper. You'll find the inventory under vocabulary.

First: write down the exact test name for your next date. Not "HSK in general". The form string.

Second: pick one syllabus that week. If the center still says classic HSK 1–6, stay on the guides and the 1–6 lists. Ignore 11,000-word targets. If the center says nine bands, HSK 7–9, or HSK 3.0 with numbered speaking, stop using the six-level guide as your only syllabus.

Third: separate skill from list. Listening from a mock of the named format. One short written line. Speaking if the form requires it. Do not open a second Anki deck "just in case".

Fourth: verify dates only on the center page and on chinesetest.cn. The Athens notice for 13 December 2026 shows how one campus communicates the shift. Your city may move on another clock. Read your institute's page, not a group chat rumor.

Fifth: if you're still on classic beginner paper (HSK 1–2), do not abandon lines you can already produce. 你好，我叫… (nǐ hǎo, wǒ jiào…, hello, my name is…) is still useful output. A framework change does not erase what you already say.

Sixth: if you're on classic HSK 3–6 and the center has not moved, keep the plan you had. Restarting the deck usually costs more than waiting for confirmation.

For method, how to learn Chinese still holds. For whether "conversational" is your goal or the score is, use the sibling post. Here you only pick a map.

Day 1. Open chinesetest.cn. Write down the test name on your center's next date. Copy the string. Do not misremember it.

Day 2. If it still says classic HSK 1–6, stay on the six-level list. Ignore 11,000-word targets. Open only your level guide under /guides-hsk.

Day 3. If the center says nine bands, HSK 7–9, or HSK 3.0 with numbered speaking, stop using the six-level guide as the only syllabus. Mark in red which new document they cite.

Day 4. One skill, not a second word list. Listening from a mock of the named format, or one written line of 8–12 syllables. Short line example: 今天我想复习生词 (jīntiān wǒ xiǎng fùxí shēngcí, today I want to review new words).

Day 5. Another skill on the same paper. If the form includes speaking, record 45–90 seconds. If not, timed reading. Do not open a second deck.

Day 6. Repeat the weaker skill. One fix only: one tone, one missing word, or one character you confuse. Not "review all of HSK 4".

Day 7. A short mock of the format your center named. Timer on. No dictionary pauses. When you finish, compare the mock name to the day-1 string. If they don't match, bin the mock, not your progress.

If the center notice changes mid-week, return to day 1. Do not invent a hybrid list "just in case".
