HSK 1 in 8 weeks: a real plan

Fluency does not fit this plan. Eight weeks at 20 minutes is about 18 hours on the clock. That can be enough for classic HSK 1 if you do not collect. It is not enough for a two-hour dinner without switching languages.

The U.S. Foreign Service Institute places Mandarin near 2,200 classroom hours for professional working proficiency (FSI overview). That number is not “hours to HSK 1.” It is the case against fluency in a month or in 100 days.

HSK 1 lets you greet people, say who you are, and ask a price. Usable lines: 你好 (nǐ hǎo), 谢谢 (xièxie), 我是学生 (wǒ shì xuésheng, I am a student), 多少钱 (duōshao qián, how much is it). That is counter survival. It is not an opinion, not irony, not a meeting.

If your real goal is conversation, this calendar is the floor, not the ceiling. Finish it. Then move up with audio and sentences said out loud. Do not stretch HSK 1 “until you feel fluent.” That feeling does not arrive in week 8.

Six-level HSK 1 is about 150 words. The written paper includes pinyin. Wikipedia HSK summarizes that count. Registration and rules live at chinesetest.cn. CLEC coordinates international Chinese language education. None of the three will congratulate you for a streak.

That is the classic paper, not the 2021 framework. In 2021 the standard moved to nine bands. The lexicon is counted differently there. Do not mix words from that map with the six-level paper in the same week. If your center tests the long-running HSK, study those ~150. If it tests another scheme, ask the center. Do not guess from an app.

This site publishes HSK vocabulary with 12,432 public words. The HSK 1 list is wider than 150 on purpose: daily study is not the exam PDF. Do not treat “words on this site” as “words chinesetest.cn asks for.” Pick the paper your center will mark and close that inventory.

Pinyin on the test is not a license to ignore hanzi at home. On the paper it helps you read. On the street it does not sit above 买 and 卖. 买 (mǎi, to buy) and 卖 (mài, to sell) look close and turn on tone. If you only study the gloss, you flatten them.

It is not a speaking test either. Written HSK scores listening and reading. Speaking has a separate exam. You can know 谢谢 on a card and miss it in audio. The plan treats that hole as the work, not a footnote.

The daily clock is already written. This article does not copy it. Use the 20-minute routine: SRS queue, listening, output, tones. Here the only job is what belongs in that window each week.

Twenty minutes every day beats three hours on Saturday. Saturday lets you cram 40 new words and zero ear. By Monday you cannot tell 买 from 卖. The useful HSK 1 cap is 3 to 5 new words a day. The rest of the session is retrieval and sound.

If a day only has 10 minutes, cut new cards, not the queue. If you miss three days, do not “catch up” on Sunday with a binge. Return to the clock. Memory debt is paid in days.

Eight weeks at 20 minutes is about 18 hours. At 4 new words a day, with review, the ~150 fit. What does not fit: a second streak app or the ocean of 12,432 cards.

Weeks 1 and 2 are not “finish the list.” They are ear and sentences you can say without looking at your phone. New words: 3 to 5 a day, all inside greetings, identity, and one price.

Week 1. Three required lines, every day, out loud: 你好. 谢谢. 我是学生. If 学生 comes out flat, that is the tone card, not a new video. Listening: one short greeting. Second pass, no transcript. Saturday, 10 minutes off the daily clock: say those three without pinyin. If they fail, do not add family or food.

Week 2. The counter arrives. 多少钱 has to come out as a question, not a gloss. Add the pair 买 / 卖 on the same day, in the same sentence. Example: 我买这个，多少钱 (wǒ mǎi zhège, duōshao qián, I’ll buy this, how much?). Then flip it: someone 卖, you 买. A Spanish- or English-speaking ear flattens mǎi and mài. That pair is the week’s exam, more than ten new nouns.

At the end of day 14, check three signals. You hear 你好 before you read it. You say 谢谢 without hunting for it. 买 and 卖 are not the same word in your mouth. If all three fail, new words go to zero in week 3 until the ear holds. If they hold, continue. Do not jump to HSK 2 “so you don’t get bored.” Boredom here is the method.

Weeks 3 to 5 close the classic paper’s inventory. Same cap: 3 to 5 new words, each in a sentence said the same day. Do not open the site’s long list “to get ahead.” Getting ahead is hearing what you already have.

Week 3. People, numbers, and simple time, always in a sentence. 我是学生 stays alive. Listening: a classroom or shopping dialogue, without pausing every syllable. The goal is not 100%. It is that 多少钱 does not ambush you.

Week 4. Short actions. 买 and 卖 come back, not as “I already saw those.” Build four counter sentences and say them at the speed of an impatient person. One day this week, a slightly longer listen, still without an exam timer. If the SRS queue is a red wall, you cut new cards. The wall means week 2 lied quietly.

Week 5. You close the ~150 of the six-level paper. Before you add anything, compare your deck with what your center tests, not with the app’s count. If your local list has 180 “HSK 1” items because it mixed in the 2021 framework, pull those extra cards out of the weekly queue. Do not study them “in case the exam changed” without asking. One map per week.

By the end of week 5 you should not be hunting HSK 3 words “because they are useful.” Useful for whom. The HSK 1 paper will not ask for them. It will ask you to hear 谢谢 in audio that does not wait. That is why the next two weeks add almost no lexicon.

Weeks 6 and 7 change the job. Almost no new words, unless a hole already showed up in audio. The daily cap goes to uncomfortable listening and to reading with the pinyin the paper actually includes, without making pinyin your home.

Week 6. Audio at exam speed. One dialogue, listen, answer, listen again. If you pause every syllable, you are studying a transcript, not listening. In reading, use HSK 1 pinyin the way it appears on the written test. In the home session, the card face is still hanzi. If you only read pinyin, week 8 will hand back characters you “already knew.”

Week 7. Timed slices, not the full mock. Fifteen minutes: listening plus reading at your level. Log misses in two mental columns: I did not hear the word, or I did not read it. 买 / 卖 almost always lands in the first. 我是学生 lands in the second if you memorized the line and never saw it split. You repair that. You do not open a new PDF.

A common error: “listening makes me nervous, I’ll leave it for the end.” The end is week 8, and there is no slack left. Another: mixing a “more realistic” nine-band audio with the six-level paper. Realistic for what. If the center tests the classic exam, train that ear.

If you are still measuring the plan by a streak, the plan already lied. The useful signal is reacting to 多少钱 before you translate. If that has not arrived, do not ask for a date. Ask for another week 7, not a new list.

Week 8 does not add syllabus. It adds two passes at the paper and a decision. There is no magic mark a blog can invent for you. There are leaks: listening that drops, reading that holds, or the reverse.

Monday or Tuesday: first mock. Exam conditions, or as close as you can get. When you finish, you do not “review everything.” You list only what you missed. Wednesday to Friday: those cards, in audio and out loud. If you missed 谢谢 by ear, do not read it ten times. Hear it. If you missed 买 / 卖 by tone, the routine’s two-minute drill is the fix, not a phonetics chapter.

Saturday: second mock. Compare leaks, not an imaginary ranking. If listening is still a wall, do not register. Another week of ear hurts less than paying for an exam that confirms what you already saw. CLEC does not set your Sunday. The test center does. Check the session, the site, and the language of the instructions. This calendar does not replace the rules. It tells you when you have earned the right to look at them without putting on a play.

The plan lied if by week 8 you call greeting people “fluency.” It lied if you stuffed 40 words on day 3. It lied if week 4 mixed nine-band cards into the six-level paper because they showed up in the app.

It lied if you never heard 你好 without text. It lied if 买 and 卖 are still one syllable in your mouth. It lied if you skipped both mocks and booked a date from the blog calendar, not from your ear. It lied if you treated FSI’s 2,200 hours as if they were HSK 1, or the reverse: as if eight weeks canceled that scale.

The fix is ugly and short. New words to zero. Back to week 1 and 2 sentences. Listening before lists. A mock when the ear holds, not when the streak hits 56. The HSK 1 vocabulary is for lookup. It is not week 3’s ocean.
