The HSK 3 vocabulary jump

HSK 2 is about 300 cumulative words; HSK 3 is about 600. Cap new cards at 3 to 5 a day, write without pinyin, and open the list only if listening holds.

You finished the HSK 2 lists and the HSK 3 vocabulary jump stops you cold. The classic paper moves from about 300 cumulative words to about 600. That is roughly 300 new ones stacked on the 300 you already “had.” The HSK 2 guide was the floor. This job is different: a clock and output, not the structure syllabus.

If what you want is “I can already converse,” that is not this jump. Read what HSK level is conversational. HSK 3 covers travel, study, and basic work if you rehearse. It does not cover a long dinner. The skill map lives in the HSK 3 guide. This piece is for people who closed HSK 2 cards and stall when the next deck opens.

Key takeaways

  • Classic HSK 3 is about 600 cumulative words: roughly 300 new ones on top of HSK 2’s ~300. The jump is that inventory, not a second language.
  • Four to six new words a day will drown the queue. The useful cap is 3 to 5. If due explodes, new cards go to zero until the session clears reviews.
  • On the six-level paper, writing arrives at HSK 3 and the pinyin crutch ends. Knowing the gloss is not enough.
  • Open the HSK 3 list only if HSK 2 listening still holds. If the ear is still falling over, stay. This site’s 12,432 words are not the paper.

The list doubles: 300 on top of 300

The count hurts because it is arithmetic, not marketing. Six-level HSK 2 is about 300 cumulative words. HSK 3 is about 600. Wikipedia’s HSK page summarises that. This is not “a slightly longer list.” It is the same size again, piled on words that still slip.

The 300 “new” items do not land in an empty head. They land in a deck that still reviews 买 (mǎi, to buy) and 卖 (mài, to sell). Every young HSK 3 card fights the clock with HSK 2 due cards. That is why the jump feels like a double even though the PDF only adds three hundred.

At HSK 2, 我要这个 (wǒ yào zhège, I want this) is enough. At HSK 3 you have to build a plan and a reason. Example: 我打算明天下午去银行,因为有一个问题 (wǒ dǎsuàn míngtiān xiàwǔ qù yínháng, yīnwèi yǒu yí ge wèntí, I plan to go to the bank tomorrow afternoon because there is a problem). 打算, 银行, 因为 and 问题 are not decoration. They are the kind of piece the paper starts asking for in a sentence, not in a gloss.

Registration and the rules live on chinesetest.cn (Chinese Testing International). The CLEC coordinates Chinese language education abroad. Neither of them scores you on a streak or on an app’s word count.

There is a second map. In 2021 the standard moved to nine bands. Vocabulary is counted differently there. Do not mix those cards with the six-level paper in the same week. If your centre still runs the HSK everyone knows, the jump is 300 on top of 300. If it runs another scheme, ask the centre. Do not guess.

This site publishes 12,432 public words. That figure is not the paper. The study list is wider on purpose. Treating “words on this site” as “words chinesetest.cn will mark” is how you inflate the jump until you quit. Pick the inventory your centre will score and close that.

Writing arrives and the pinyin crutch ends

In the six-level design, HSK 1 and 2 show pinyin next to the characters and do not test writing the way the higher bands do. From HSK 3, writing arrives. Wikipedia HSK puts about 10 writing items on that paper. The pinyin crutch disappears from reading. You listen, you read bare hanzi, and in writing you produce.

HSK 3 and 4 score listening, reading, and writing at 100 each. The ceiling is 300. The classic pass mark is 180 overall, not a floor per section. The same Wikipedia page records that. You can hold reading and still sink writing. The vocabulary jump is not only more cards. It is cards you now have to write.

A typical item gives you pinyin and asks for the character. You see yínháng and you have to produce 银行, not the gloss “bank.” Another item hands you scrambled pieces and wants a grammatical sentence. Picking the right option, the HSK 2 habit, stops being the whole job.

The pair 近 (jìn, near) and 进 (jìn, to enter) shows why the crutch dies. Same pinyin. At HSK 2 you could survive on tone plus the gloss. At HSK 3 the paper puts hanzi down with no romanisation. Write the wrong shape and the word changes. 银行 will not forgive a made-up 银.

If you studied “pinyin first” and told yourself hanzi would come later, the jump bills you for both at once. The longer case is in pinyin first slows you down. The calendar here is short: writing starts on day 1 of the jump, not the day you “finish the list.” Five minutes. Three to five characters from pinyin. No calligraphy. No new stroke-order chapter.

Speaking is not on that written paper. It is HSKK, separate. This post treats lexicon and writing. The oral exam is another clock.

If your centre runs an internet test, the keyboard sometimes lets you pick the character after you type pinyin. That does not cancel the jump. You still have to tell 近 from 进. On paper you also have to remember the character.

Four to six new words a day will drown the queue

Four to six new words a day sound like an adult pace. At HSK 3 they drown the queue. You still have ~300 old cards coming due. Every new card is born with short intervals. By week 3, due work eats the 20 minutes and the day’s “new” cards never appear. Then you quit, not because HSK 3 is impossible, but because the clock lied.

The useful cap is 3 to 5 new words, each in a sentence the same day. Three a day covers about 300 introductions in roughly 100 calendar days, with gaps. Five a day covers them in about 60 days. That is the lexicon jump, not a ten-day crash. The rest of the session is due cards, listening, and one sentence said out loud.

If due cards do not fit the session, new cards go to zero. That is not a punishment. It is the only rule that stops the deck from rotting. A red wall means last week lied quietly. You drop the cap. You do not “catch up” on Saturday with 40 cards. Saturday, if anything, is due work and rewriting yesterday with no pinyin.

You already ran an HSK 2 clock if you followed how much HSK 2 vocabulary fits in 12 weeks. That piece was about closing ~150 new words on top of HSK 1. This is the same kind of clock with twice the pressure: the old cards have not left. Treating HSK 3 as “another 12-week list at HSK 1 speed” ignores that you now review two floors at once.

A common mistake is 20 new words a day because “this level is intermediate.” In the queue that is a fire. Another is opening the 12,432-word ocean “to get ahead on HSK 4.” Getting ahead is writing 银行 without looking.

Week 0, before you touch HSK 3. Zero new words from that band. You listen to a short HSK 2 dialogue with no transcript. If 多少钱 (duōshao qián, how much) still ambushes you, do not move up. If 买 and 卖 are still one syllable in your mouth, do not move up. An HSK 2 list “in green” in Anki is not an ear in green.

Weeks 1 to 4 of the jump. Three to five new words a day, all inside daily life you already use: plan, reason, place, problem. 打算 and 因为 on the same day, in the same sentence. Listening: one HSK 3 sentence and one old HSK 2 clip. Saturday, new cards at zero. At the end of day 28, if due is still a wall, do not open more inventory. You repeat week 4 at a cap of 3, or at a cap of 0. At 4 new words a day, half of 300 is about 38 introduction days, not two weekends. If you only have 10 minutes, you cut new cards, not the queue.

Output or you quit

People rarely quit HSK 3 because they “never saw the list.” They recognised 问题 (wèntí, problem; question) on the card and could not use it the next day. The jump doubles passive lexicon if there is no output. Output is the valve. Without it, 300 new words become 300 glosses that collapse into each other.

The same-day rule is short. Each new word is said out loud in a sentence of yours. Then you write it by hand or on a keyboard with no pinyin on screen. Then you hear it in a sentence you did not write. If you only do the front of the card, you are studying HSK 2 with more cards. HSK 2 forgave more of that trick. HSK 3 does not.

Five minutes of writing is not calligraphy. It is the paper’s item: pinyin on one scrap, hanzi on the other. Monday: 银行, 因为, 问题. Tuesday: yesterday’s again, plus 打算. If 银 will not come out, that is the day’s card, not a radicals video. Perfect stroke order can wait. A recognisable character cannot.

A fifteen-second drill at the close. No pinyin on screen. You say yesterday’s line: 我打算去银行. If it comes out flat, that is the tone card, not a new list. If it does not come out, you do not add 同事 (tóngshì, colleague) “because it is useful.” Useful for whom, if 银行 is still not yours.

Finishing the HSK 2 list is recognition. If you cannot say 我觉得这个问题很简单 (wǒ juéde zhège wèntí hěn jiǎndān, I think this problem is simple) without reading, you are not ready to inflate the deck. Repeat that sentence until it comes out.

One true sentence beats a copied paragraph. The HSK 3 paper does not ask for an HSK 4 composition. It asks that the new pieces exist off the card. The useful signal is reacting to 因为 in audio before you translate. It is writing 进 when the item wants “enter,” not “near.” If those two do not arrive, do not open more of the HSK 3 list. Drop the cap.

Open HSK 3 only if HSK 2 listening holds

You do not need another syllabus guide today. You need a rule. If you can hear a short HSK 2 dialogue with no transcript, and due cards fit the session, open the HSK 3 inventory. If listening still collapses, stay. The next step is the ear you have not closed.

The HSK 3 vocabulary list is that inventory. Use it as a ceiling for the classic paper, not as an ocean. Three to five new words, a sentence said, a character written, queue first. 把, 被 and 比 still live in the level guide. This post does not clone that.

If it is not time to move up, stay on HSK 1–2 and in the HSK 2 guide. The free tier covers that band. HSK 3 in the app does not. Do not pay to open a deck your ear cannot hold. Chinese Trainer publishes the list so you can look it up. The official exam is still booked on chinesetest.cn.

The plan lied if you added 20 new words on day 2. It lied if you never wrote 银行. It lied if you treated 12,432 as the paper. It lied if you moved up because Anki painted HSK 2 green and audio still flattens 买 and 卖. The fix is ugly and short. New cards to zero. Sentences from what you already have. The HSK 3 list when listening holds, not when the ego wants the next badge.

Frequently asked questions

How much vocabulary does HSK 3 have?

In the six-level system, HSK 3 is about 600 cumulative words: HSK 2’s ~300 plus about 300 new ones. Wikipedia HSK summarises that. The 2021 framework has nine bands; do not mix it with this paper. This site’s 12,432 words are not your centre’s syllabus.

Why do so many people stall at HSK 3?

Because the list doubles and writing shows up at the same time. Anyone who clears HSK 2 cards and then adds 4 to 6 new words a day watches the queue explode within two weeks. Weak HSK 2 listening makes the jump worse. That is pace, not talent.

How many new HSK 3 words a day?

Three to five, each in a sentence you say and write the same day. Four to six feel grown-up and drown due cards. If reviews do not fit the session, new cards go to zero. Do not catch up on Saturday with a binge.

Does HSK 3 have writing, and is there pinyin?

On the classic six-level paper, HSK 1 and 2 show pinyin and do not test writing the way the higher bands do. From HSK 3, writing arrives (about 10 items) and the pinyin crutch goes away. Register at chinesetest.cn. Speaking is HSKK, separate.
