Tones Spanish speakers miss

Spanish has stress, not lexical tone. Drill mā má mǎ mà (妈麻马骂), tone 2 vs 3, 买/卖 at the shop, and flattened tone 3. Record the miss.

The miss is not that you cannot name the four tones. It is that a Spanish ear treats them as sentence tune, not as part of the word. This is not the tones theory page. That page describes the system. The job here is to hear mā, má, mǎ, and mà on your own recording: 妈, 麻, 马, 骂.

The interference map (word order, 了, ser vs estar) lives on Chinese for Spanish speakers. The study clock is still the 20-minute routine. Speaking with nobody in the room is a different protocol: practice speaking Chinese alone. This page is only the ear. The wider learn Chinese map can wait.

Passing the written HSK does not test speech. The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) that Wikipedia HSK summarizes is, in the classic six-level system, listening, reading, and writing. The oral is separate: HSKK. A classic HSK 1 listening item can already drop if you hear 买 (mǎi, to buy) as 卖 (mài, to sell). Classic HSK 1, as chinesetest.cn describes it, is about 150 words. This site’s public inventory is 12,432. That is not the paper. You do not need that ocean for the drill. You need four syllables your ear still merges.

Key takeaways

  • Spanish marks words with stress, not lexical tone. That is why the tone error is inaudible to you: your ear treats pitch as sentence melody.
  • The pair that lies most is tone 2 (rises) against tone 3 (low, and it needs time). The 30-second quartet mā má mǎ mà (妈麻马骂) puts it in front of you.
  • At the counter, 买 (mǎi) is tone 3 and 卖 (mài) is tone 4. In a row, tone 3 flattens; 3+3 takes sandhi, not two valleys.
  • Record the same drill. A tutor pays off when the file no longer teaches you. Until then, the phone recorder is cheaper.

Spanish has stress, not lexical tone

Lexical tone is a pitch contour that changes the lexeme. Spanish does not use it. Papa and papá are two words because the strong syllable moves. Phrase pitch does not mint a new word. In a question the pitch rises at the end. It is still the same word. English does something similar with REcord and reCORD: stress, not a Mandarin-style contour.

In Mandarin the syllable’s pitch is the word. 妈 (mā, mother) is not 马 (mǎ, horse) said “more softly.” They are two entries. A Spanish speaker hears melody. A native hears vocabulary.

That is why you do not hear the miss. A Spanish brain is trained to ignore pitch as a word feature. You hear whether you sound angry or like a question. You do not hear whether 麻 (má, hemp) rose or 马 stayed low. You hit record. You think it is fine. The file stores a different tone.

This is not a percentage of Spanish speakers who “fail tones.” There is no honest count to quote here. The mechanism is clear: stress-language interference on a tone language. CLEC backs the teaching framework. It will not grade your ear. You can, if you isolate pairs.

Do not swap this work for more hanzi. Memorizing characters is a different job. 妈 and 马 look different on paper. On audio, if your tone 1 and tone 3 both come out flat, the shop hears one syllable. Speaking flat “so I do not mess up” is the same miss in a row. The ear needs contrast.

The pair you miss: tone 2 vs 3

The pair that lies hardest is tone 2 against tone 3. Tone 2 rises. Tone 3, said alone, drops and needs time at the bottom. It may rise a little if the syllable stands by itself. A Spanish question-ear treats both as “something that goes up.”

A typical calque: you make tone 2 like a short “¿eh?”. You make tone 3 like a brief grave accent, the fall of one Spanish syllable. Both come out short. Tone 3 is not a grave. It needs duration on the low part. Speed up to sound fluent and you crush the 3. It then mimics a short 2 or a flat.

How to hear them without repeating the theory card. Say a first syllable that rises, such as 麻. Say 马 alone, slowly: drop and stay down a beat. If both sound like the same curve, the pair is not there yet. Do not move to the shop.

The rules lab is still Mandarin tones. This post does not clone that guide. The test here is binary: on the file, does it rise or stay low? One question per take.

The HSK 1 guide says what the paper contains. It will not listen. Classic listening already uses one-syllable words where tone decides. You need 麻 and 马 not to come out as twins on your clip. One fix per file: if you wrote “flat 3,” the next day you only listen for that.

mā má mǎ mà in thirty seconds

The thirty-second drill is 妈 麻 马 骂, in that order, then shuffled. It is not a dialogue. It is not shadowing three lines. That protocol lives in how to speak Chinese alone. Each take here is the quartet.

Set it up this way. Phone about 20 cm away. No music. No peeking at pinyin on the second pass. Say the four with a gloss, so they do not turn into an empty tongue twister:

妈 (mā, mother): high and level. Do not fall at the end the way a Spanish statement does.

麻 (má, hemp): rise. The rise is the word, not question decoration.

马 (mǎ, horse): in isolation, drop and stay down a moment. No opera valley. Time, not drama.

骂 (mà, to scold): fall hard and short. Do not stretch it into a wail.

First pass: the four in order, slow. Second: the four again, a bit faster. Third: shuffle. Example: 马 妈 骂 麻. If 马 and 麻 still sound the same in the shuffle, stop. Do not “finish the minute” with new vocabulary.

Thirty seconds fit in the two tone minutes of the 20-minute routine. If those two minutes are all you have, this quartet beats singing a song. The song hides the pair. The quartet puts it in front of you.

妈 麻 马 骂 is the textbook quartet, not the whole HSK 1 syllabus. 妈妈 (māma, mum) shows up early. 骂 can wait. The ear still trains the same way: one syllable, four lexemes.

买 and 卖 at the shop

At the counter, the pair that changes the deal is 买 (mǎi, to buy) against 卖 (mài, to sell). One is tone 3. The other is tone 4. It is not the 2 vs 3 pair. It is the pair a seller hears as “are you buying or selling?”

If both come out as a flat “mai,” the other person cannot guess your intent. The gloss on the card can be perfect. The audio is not.

Shop drill, five and five. 我要买这个 (wǒ yào mǎi zhège, I want to buy this). 这个卖多少钱 (zhège mài duōshao qián, how much is this selling for). Same mouth, same day. Do not mix this block with the mā má mǎ mà quartet on the same file until each job is clean. One file, one contrast.

Spanish pushes an extra miss: rushing 多少钱 to sound like a checkout. Haste crushes 买 and leaves 卖 without a fall. Slow is the fix. Fast is a disguise.

买 and 卖 sit on the classic HSK 1 scale, not in the 12,432-word ocean. Written-test signup: chinesetest.cn. When they already split, stop adding shop lines. The Spanish-speaker hub names more interference. Today’s job is this pair.

Tone 3 flattens in sequence

Tone 3 in isolation and tone 3 in a row are not the same gesture. Alone, you may hear the drop and a little rise. In a chain, especially before another tone 3, the first syllable does not put a dramatic valley on every beat. It flattens. It sounds lower and shorter. Or, before another 3, it behaves like tone 2.

The line you already have: 你好 (nǐ hǎo, hello). Both syllables are tone 3 in the dictionary. In the mouth, 你 is not a second valley. Tone-3 sandhi is that change before another 3: it sounds more like a rise, and 好 stays low. If both rise, you are not saying 你好. If both do a stage valley, you are not saying it either.

This is qualitative. There is no lab percentage here and no magic millisecond. The classroom rule is stable. Tone 3 plus tone 3: the first one behaves like tone 2. Before tone 1, 2, or 4, the 3 often stays low, without the full isolation gesture. Train 你好 and 很好 (hěn hǎo, very good) slowly. Then 可以 (kěyǐ, to be able to), another 3 plus 3.

The Spanish miss is giving every 3 the full valley. It tires you. It flattens everything else. And your ear, again, does not hear the mismatch because “each syllable had emphasis.” Spanish emphasis is not Chinese tone 3.

When 你好 already sounds different from two rises, stop adding new 3-plus-3 pairs. The system card stays on Mandarin tones. The file decides whether sandhi is audible yet.

How to record the ear drill

Record the drill, not a diary. One file. The same syllables. Three days, not a month of different clips. If the third take still sounds flat, the hole is the ear, not the inventory.

How. Phone upright, 20 cm, no music. Say the quartet in order twice. Shuffle once. If today’s block is the shop, 买 / 卖 five times each. If the block is sandhi, 你好 four times and 很好 four. Do not mix all three blocks on the same day. One job.

How to listen. Headphones. No pinyin. One question: can I tell 马 from 麻? Or: does 买 fall differently from 卖? Or: is the 你 in 你好 not a second valley? One question. One note line. “Flat 3” is enough.

Name the file with the date: 2026-09-14-tones.m4a. Three takes of the same drill are progress you can show without an exam. This does not replace the HSKK.

If a day sounds better, do not reward yourself with new syllables. Reward with the same take a little faster. Speaking over a model is a different job: the ear leans on the native and never hears your flat 3. The shadowing protocol is in speaking alone. Here the backing track goes quiet.

When a tutor (human or AI) is worth paying

A tutor is worth paying when the third file still sounds the same and you can no longer hear the miss. Until then, the recorder is cheaper. A chat that praises the correct character is not tutoring tone.

A human tutor pays off when you already have the quartet and the shop pair. You bring the file. Two sessions with that clip beat an hour of free chat inside 你好.

An AI tutor pays off if it hears, not if it only reads. Perfect text for 卖 can still be audio of 买. Check against a native clip.

Do not pay to be told again that there are four tones. That already lives on the tones guide. Pay when your file no longer teaches you. If you do not yet have three takes of the same drill, record first. The tutor hears you. It does not examine you.

Practice tones in your account

If the file no longer teaches you, the next step is not another hanzi list. It is the same drill with someone, or a model, that remembers your 2 vs 3 pair. Chinese Trainer opens that practice when you sign in. AI answers can be wrong: a tone marked “fine” can still be flat. Check against your clip. Frequently asked questions

Why can’t Spanish speakers hear their own Mandarin tones?

Spanish marks words with stress (papa / papá), not with a pitch contour that changes the lexeme. Sentence pitch rises in a question and the word stays the same. In Mandarin, 妈 and 马 are two entries. Your ear ignores the feature Chinese needs. The file still stores it.

How do I tell tone 2 from tone 3?

Tone 2 rises. Tone 3, said alone, drops and needs time at the bottom; it is not a short Spanish grave accent. If you speed up, tone 3 flattens and sounds like a short 2. File test: does it rise, or does it stay low? One question per take. The theory lives on the tones hub; the job here is to hear the pair.

Does the third tone always dip and rise?

No. In isolation you may hear the dip and a bit of rise. In sequence it flattens: low and short, with no opera valley on every syllable. Before another tone 3, sandhi applies: the first one behaves like tone 2. On 你好, if both syllables rise, you are not saying 你好. That is qualitative, not a lab percentage.

Does HSK 1 test tones?

Classic HSK scores listening, reading, and writing. Speaking is the HSKK. A listening item can already fail if you hear 买 as 卖. Classic HSK 1 is about 150 words; 12,432 is this site’s inventory, not the paper. Counts: Wikipedia HSK. Registration: chinesetest.cn.
