Skritter vs Chinese Trainer: handwriting vs HSK path

Skritter is a handwriting-recognition app for Chinese and Japanese. On skritter.com you write the character in the browser or the app and get stroke-level grading at once. Hard characters come back sooner. If the goal is not forgetting components and stroke order, that is the job.

Chinese Trainer is an HSK study path on the web: this site's HSK lists, SRS, grammar, readings, and an AI tutor. HSK is the official Mandarin proficiency exam; registration stays on chinesetest.cn. Writing practice exists. It is not Skritter-grade stroke recognition. We do not claim that.

The usual mistake is hunting for a single winner. On r/ChineseLanguage, Skritter is a character specialist, not a course. Chinese Trainer does not replace that specialty. Skritter does not replace an exam syllabus either.

Skritter presents itself as a tool to learn to write Chinese and Japanese. The core people search is handwriting recognition. For example, you write 语 (yǔ, “language”) and the system tells you if the stroke and the order were right. Recognising 汉语 (Hànyǔ, “Chinese”) on a flashcard is not the same as writing 语 from memory.

It also has textbook lists and user lists. That fits if you already follow a manual. It fits worse if what you lack is listening, spoken output, or a mock paper.

Chinese Trainer puts HSK vocabulary, SRS flashcards, grammar, readings, and a tutor that remembers your level on the web. Account screens are not indexed. The public lists are.

There is writing practice. There is not the same “write the character and we grade the stroke” engine. If your exam or teacher needs serious calligraphy, cancelling Skritter to come here is a bad swap.

Register on chinesetest.cn. CLEC runs the framework. Classic six-level bands (150 to 5,000 words) are on Wikipedia HSK. This site is not a test center.

We do not guarantee a pass. We do tell you which list you cover and which level guide to read before you register.

Bottleneck = writing hanzi. Stay on Skritter. Add Chinese Trainer only when you no longer know which HSK list to study after the day's characters.

Bottleneck = “what do I study today?” Start with Chinese Trainer. Skritter can wait until hanzi is the real pain, often HSK 3–4.

You want both. Same day, this order: characters in Skritter, then the HSK queue and a reading or the tutor here. Do not clone the same deck in both apps.

Chinese Trainer is not a stroke-recognition engine. If your teacher needs 语 (yǔ, language) with stroke order, stay on skritter.com. Cancelling one for the other is the miss this page exists to stop.

Teaching note: recognising 写 (xiě, to write) on a flashcard and writing 写 from memory are two skills. Skritter trains the second. This path trains the level queue. Use them the same day, not the same deck.

An honest stack for someone who writes and sits the exam: Pleco to look up, Skritter for strokes, Chinese Trainer for the daily path. Reddit usually recommends that kind of pile, not a single winner.

For example, a 40-minute combined day: 15 minutes in Skritter on 写 (xiě, “to write”) and 语 (yǔ, “language”); 20 minutes on the HSK queue here; 5 minutes in Pleco only for the character that broke. Do not clone the same deck in both apps.

Skritter asks for a character and stroke order. The day's list asks for 我是学生 in a sentence. They are not the same clock. If you only do strokes, classic HSK hears you and does not understand you.

An honest block: 10 minutes of stroke on hanzi already in the queue. Not 40 new characters «in case the teacher asks». The six-level paper barely looks at the brush. Counts: Wikipedia HSK.

Teaching note: a well-written 语 (yǔ, language) does not teach 汉语. 汉语 on a card does not teach 我是学生. Skritter wins the first. The queue wins the third. Pleco explains the middle.

If a teacher wants a notebook, Skritter stays. If nobody looks at the stroke and listening falls, cut Skritter to a warm-up. The ear is not fixed with more ink.

Do not copy the whole HSK deck into Skritter on Sunday. You will pay two SRS loops for the same 写 (xiě, to write). Pick the writing leeches. The rest lives on the path.

Chinese Trainer is not Skritter. It does not correct the stroke live. HSK 1–2 free, with limits. AI tutor Premium, with a cap. We do not promise a pass. chinesetest.cn is still another URL.

It gets in the way when the stroke clock eats listening. Classic HSK hears first. A Sunday of 80 characters and zero audio is a lost month for the paper.

It gets in the way when you use Skritter to fake a syllabus. Recognising components is not HSK 3. About 600 words in sentence and ear are the table floor, not a full notebook.

It gets in the way when 买 and 卖 come out well drawn and badly said. The stand hears the tone. The brush does not speak. HelloChinese or level audio fix that pair. Skritter does not.

Teaching note: if a character breaks in a reading, the tap is Pleco, not another stroke. OCR and gloss first. Then, if a teacher asks, stroke order.

Cancel Skritter only if nobody looks at the notebook and hanzi no longer hurts. If it hurts, stay. Add a path. Do not replace the path with more ink.
