HelloChinese wins if the goal is Mandarin: tones, pinyin, characters, and a path closer to HSK. Duolingo wins if the goal is opening the app every day with almost no friction and a large free tier.

On r/ChineseLanguage, Duolingo is often fun but shallow. HelloChinese is a decent beginner course. Neither replaces a dictionary (Pleco), and neither is a full HSK plan.

Duolingo Chinese is Mandarin (Putonghua), not Cantonese. Audio follows the Beijing standard. That does not make it an exam syllabus. You can keep a streak for a year and still not know whether you cover HSK 1 or HSK 3.

HelloChinese is Mandarin-only. That focus is the advantage. It does not teach Japanese or Korean in the same app. If Chinese is your only goal in year one, it is usually the cleaner path.

HelloChinese treats tone and speech checks as core. Duolingo plays audio and checks word choice; it does not tell you if your tone was right.

Teaching note: 买 (mǎi, to buy) and 卖 (mài, to sell) are the pair that betrays a flat ear. An app that does not correct tone lets you sell when you meant to buy. HelloChinese takes that pair more seriously than Duolingo.
