Reading Chinese as a beginner is not opening 人民日报. It is not Native, or Weibo, or the thread a native skims on the metro. That is native text. You have a short list. The job is a text that uses that list, not a newspaper that proves you are serious.
The phrases hub is for a counter. It is not a reading protocol. A card that says “I am a student” does not teach you to cross a paragraph. A graded reading does. You see 我是学生 (wǒ shì xuéshēng, I am a student) and 这是老师 (zhè shì lǎoshī, this is the teacher) in a text that does not drown you.
The HSK 1 that chinesetest.cn describes is about 150 words. This site’s public inventory is 12,432. That number is not what you read in week one. The paper, in the frame Wikipedia’s HSK page summarises, already puts characters in the reading section, with pinyin beside them. You read hanzi on the first exam. You read little. You read at the level.
Key takeaways
- A newspaper, Native, Weibo, and 人民日报 are not beginner reading. Input is a text at the level of your list.
- Classic HSK 1 is about 150 words, with pinyin on the paper. This site’s 12,432 words are not week-one reading.
- First pass: no dictionary binge. Second pass: three unknown words as a ceiling. If you count more, the text is too high.
- Then listen to the same text. Pinyin belongs in the margin, not as a house.

A newspaper is not input
Input, at the start, is a text you can finish. A Chinese newspaper is not that. 人民日报 is written for people who already live in Chinese. Weibo is written for a timeline. Native and apps like it sell “real content.” Real, here, means native. Native is not your list.
The brain mistakes hardness for progress. If every line makes you sweat, you feel you studied. The next day you miss 是 (shì, to be). You sweated translation, not reading. Reading leaves a sentence you can see again.
Classic HSK 1 does not test you with an editorial. chinesetest.cn puts that level at about 150 words, with listening and reading. The CLEC runs Chinese as a second language at the official layer. Neither asks for a Beijing daily in week one. They ask for short recognition, sometimes with a picture, sometimes with a sentence the size of 我是学生.
12,432 words on this site are a catalogue. They help you search and they help later. If your reading plan is “one more article from the huge list,” you are collecting. Collecting is not reading. Reading is repeating a paragraph that fits today’s cap.
Do not save face with headlines. A 人民日报 headline is still newspaper lexicon. If it is not on your list, close it.
The twin mistake is glossing every character in a native clip. You end with a highlighted page and no eye fluency. The eye needs few new words, many times. A newspaper gives the inverse.
If someone tells you to “immerse,” ask which pool. HSK 1 is a small pool. The HSK 1 guide says what that paper tests. A daily paper does not go in.
The same level as your list
Useful reading uses the words you already study. Chinese graded readers are texts written with one level’s lexicon, not a native’s. If your list is HSK 1, the text reuses 我, 是, 这, 学生, 老师. It does not invent a feature story. It does not slip in 经济 because you “almost get it.” Almost does not count. Either it is on the list, or it is one of the three unknowns in the protocol. There is no third bucket called “I’ll just peek.”
HSK 1 vocabulary is this week’s ceiling, not the 12,432 inventory. A text graded to that ceiling looks like this: 我是学生。这是老师。 You can stretch it a little: 老师好。我是学生。 It is still the same bucket. If the next paragraph wants HSK 4 words, the text lied about its level.
This is not a clone of the phrases hub. That hub stores survival lines: a counter, a taxi, a hello. You read those to say one thing and leave. A graded reading ties them into a tiny world. There is an I, a teacher, a classroom. The eye meets 是 twice. The ear later hears the same two sentences. A loose list does not do that job.
How to pick the text: look before you “study.” Count the words that are not on your list. If you see more than three in the first lines, it is not your level. That is not a noble challenge. It is the wrong file. Find another one, shorter, poorer in lexicon. Poor is a compliment here.
How not to pick: by adult topic. China news, a Weibo thread, a Native piece because it ranks. Topic can wait. Today is classroom, name, yes and no. 我是学生 is not childish. It is the paper.
An ugly, sufficient test: can you point at 学生 and 老师 without the gloss after two days? If not, the newspaper was not going to fix it. You were missing same-level repetition. The HSK 1 guide marks the perimeter. This post says how to read inside it.
The three-unknowns protocol
The protocol has two passes. The first is not a dictionary binge. The second allows three new words, no more. If the count hits four, you drop the text. That is not “extra work.” That is a swap.
First pass. You read 我是学生。这是老师。 start to finish. You skip Pleco and the translator. You do not look up 是 for a finer sense. You guess and keep going. The aim is to finish the text, not to sanitise it.
A binge looks like this: you stop on every hanzi, pull six senses, copy the first into the margin, and at the end you cannot recall the sentence. That was lexicography. It was not reading. The first pass trains the eye to move with a hypothesis. The hypothesis can be wrong. The second pass repairs it, with a cap.
Second pass. Now you list unknowns. In that mini-text, maybe 学生 and 老师. That is two. You open the dictionary for those only. Short gloss: student, teacher. You close it. You do not add 教室 because it “sits nearby.” You do not add a measure word a forum praised. Three is a ceiling, not a quota you must fill. Zero unknowns is legal: the text was easy. Easy gets reread and heard.
If the unknown list goes past three, you do not bargain. The text sits above your list. Drop to a shorter paragraph, or to sentences you already study. 我是学生 again is not failure. It is the level. Failure is translating 人民日报 with ten tabs and calling that “how beginners read Chinese.”
What counts as an unknown: one word. 老师 is one, not 老 plus 师. If 是 fails in this sentence, it counts. If only the tone failed, mark it for the ear.
When to stop the dictionary: when the three are glossed, or when you reach for a fourth. The fourth is the alarm. The protocol exists so the text stays reading, not a vocab class in costume. Today’s new words already have a flashcard cap. Reading is not the hunt.
One concrete day. Text: 我是学生。这是老师。 Pass one, two minutes, no dictionary phone. Pass two, 学生 and 老师 if they were needed. You stop. There is no pass three of “now I make a pretty English version.” Pretty English is not on the exam. Seeing 是 without fleeing is.
Listen to the same text
After the two passes, you hear the same text. Not a news podcast. Not a vlog. Not “a bit of native input.” The same sentences: 我是学生。这是老师。 The ear confirms what the eye just saw. If you switch texts, you train two lists halfway.
The written HSK, in the six-level design, scores listening and reading at this floor. The CLEC and chinesetest.cn do not ask for a TV bulletin. They ask you to hear words from the cap and read words from the cap. Joining both on the same paragraph is the honest shortcut. Splitting them is a hobby.
How to listen. Once without reading. Once while reading. If you can, a third time under your breath, trailing the audio. If the audio outruns your mouth, do not pick a faster clip. Play this one again. Exam speed arrives when the words are already there. It does not arrive because the clip is CCTV.
What not to do. Skip Spanish or English subtitles. They turn listening into reading your own language. Skip pinyin-only under the audio. The ear needs 学生, not xuéshēng written again.
Where it fits on the clock: the listening minutes of a 20-minute routine. Five minutes is enough if the text is short. Ten minutes of news is a different job.
If you listen and miss 老师, go back to the hanzi of the same text. The bridge is that word in that sentence. A stray audio in another dialogue breaks it. Same two lines until ear and eye meet.
Pinyin in the margin
Pinyin sits beside the line. It is not the house. At HSK 1 the paper prints it next to the characters, in the same Wikipedia frame. That lets you read 我是学生 without stalling. It also lets you cheat: you follow only the Latin letters and the hanzi never lands.
Use the margin. wǒ shì xuéshēng to the right or underneath, like the paper. On the first pass you may look if the sound sticks. On the second, cover the pinyin for at least one of the two sentences. If 这是老师 only appears when you see zhè shì lǎoshī, the reading card is not done. The character did not stay.
Delaying hanzi “until I can speak” feels like rest. It gets expensive. Why pinyin first slows you down is that argument. You speak with sound. You read with shape. If you only do pinyin, 学生 sounds familiar and on paper it is a blot. Then a newspaper looks scarier. Not because the daily is the next step. Because the eye never trained.
Do not turn the margin into pinyin calligraphy either. Do not copy xuéshēng twenty times. Copy the hanzi if you are going to write, in order, as in how to memorize Chinese characters. Pinyin is a training wheel. The wheel comes off. At HSK 3 the paper stops gifting it. Training only the wheel is signing up for that scare.
One gesture per session: 我是学生 with a margin, 这是老师 covered if you already heard it. Reverse it the next day.
If pinyin fixes a tone, note it and return to the character. The margin is a label that falls off, not a second language.
Same-level reading in the account
Close the newspaper debate. Open a text at the level of your list. Two passes. Three unknowns as a ceiling. Audio of the same sentences. Pinyin in the margin, covered once.
Chinese Trainer generates readings and listening at your level on Premium because the models cost money. The free HSK 1–2 plan still has practice: the list, drills, the day’s loop. You do not need to pay to read 我是学生. You pay if you want extra generation. The AI can be wrong. The official exam still lives on chinesetest.cn.
One step: open the account and read at the same level. Today, a paragraph that fits. Tomorrow, the same one, or one just as poor in lexicon. The newspaper waits until the list grows. So does Weibo. 人民日报 is not a week-one prize. It is another language, the native one, and it is not yours yet.
Pinyin is the official romanization of Mandarin. Hanzi are the written Chinese characters. HSK is Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi. Reviewed by Javier Garcia Floriano. About us. Contact.

Frequently asked questions
Can I read a Chinese newspaper as a beginner?
Not as practice. 人民日报, Weibo, and Native are native text. Classic HSK 1 is about 150 words. A newspaper does not fit that list. Use graded readings at your vocabulary level.
What are Chinese graded readers?
Texts written with one level’s lexicon, not a native’s. If your list is HSK 1, the text reuses 我是学生 and 这是老师. It is not a dump of survival phrases and not a clipped news story.
How many unknown words can I allow in a Chinese text?
Three on the second pass, as a ceiling. The first pass does not open the dictionary. If the count goes past three, the text sits above your list. Drop it. Do not translate the whole paragraph.
Should I read with pinyin as a Chinese beginner?
In the margin, yes. As a house, no. The HSK 1 paper shows pinyin next to the hanzi. It helps you hear and keeps you unstuck. It does not replace seeing the character. Cover it on one of the passes.
