LingoDeer vs Chinese Trainer: grammar vs HSK path

LingoDeer is a grammar-based course for Asian languages. On lingodeer.com the curriculum is built by language teachers. You get grammar explanations, native audio, and flashcards in the same app. It fits if you come from a European language and hate opaque example sentences.

Chinese Trainer is a measurable HSK path: HSK lists, SRS, readings, mocks, and an AI tutor. SRS is spaced repetition: the queue brings back words you are about to forget. Less textbook lesson. More “which list are you covering today.” HSK is the official Mandarin exam; you do not register inside LingoDeer.

LingoDeer sells itself as a grammar-clear course, not a streak game. For example: 我不是老师 (Wǒ bú shì lǎoshī, “I am not a teacher”). The app explains 是 / 不是 and word order. Duolingo more often asks you to tap the right chip without that note.

It also has stories and native-speaker audio, according to its own product page. That helps the ear and context. It does not turn the course into an HSK mock.

Alignment with the paper is weaker than an app built around the exam. You can finish a unit and still not know whether you cover HSK 2 or HSK 4. Official registration is not inside LingoDeer.

Register on chinesetest.cn. CLEC runs the framework. Classic six-level bands (150 to 5,000 words) are on Wikipedia HSK. This site is not a test center.

A good course teaches you to build 我每天学习汉语 (Wǒ měi tiān xuéxí Hànyǔ, “I study Chinese every day”). An HSK inventory tells you whether 学习 and 汉语 sit on the list for the level you want. For example, LingoDeer does the first better. Chinese Trainer does the second in the open.

The daily queue comes from this site's lists, not from a unit named like a textbook lesson. The AI tutor can ask about a recent miss. It does not replace a teacher, and answers can be wrong. Chinese Trainer is an indie product; the official exam stays on chinesetest.cn.

We do not try to clone LingoDeer's grammar notes. If you already understood a rule there, you use it here inside vocabulary, reading, and practice. You do not have to unlearn the course.

If the 是 / 不是 rule is still soft, one lesson and three sentences. 我不是老师 out loud. Do not open an HSK 4 deck to compensate. The course wins the note; it does not win the inventory.

LingoDeer wins the note: why 不 sits before the verb in 我不是老师. That note does not time the audio. Classic HSK hears first. A clear gloss is not a mock.

If you understand the rule and fail the clip, do not open another grammar lesson. Open five to ten minutes of same-level listening, without text, then with text. 请再说一遍 does not exist on the paper.

If a rule will not come out, one card with 我不是老师 plus audio is enough. Do not clone the chapter. Pleco looks up the character that breaks. Anki is not the dictionary.

When the course runs short on the HSK list, move the serious block to this site's lists. Bring the notebook. Do not replay every lesson to fake a level.

Teaching note: 您 in a LingoDeer gloss does not rehearse the lobby. The lobby is Chinese for business. A beginner course is not a trade fair.
