HSK 6 guide: 5,000 words and authentic input

HSK 6 is the ceiling of the classic six-level exam, with a count of about 5,000 cumulative words. It measures reading opinion and writing with 话题–说明. It is not a native-fluency certificate.

Teaching note. Learners who fail 6 on «easy words misheard» do not need a 1,000-rare-word deck: they need HSK 5 stamina and SRS of the base.

Daily authentic input plus HSK 4–5 review beats a huge rare-word deck. 然而 and 因此 are tools, not decoration. Register only on chinesetest.cn. Framework: CLEC. Count summary: Wikipedia HSK.

Classic HSK 6 is about 5,000 cumulative words. HSK 7+ on this site is another list, for the 2021 advanced bands. It is not an exam guide. If your center still uses the six-level paper, stay on these pages.

Inventory: HSK 6 list. Use it so rare items do not slip; do not make it the only work of the day. The paper asks you to read a lightly graded article and say what the author thinks.

Passing HSK 6 says you can handle exam literacy: opinion texts, continuous audio, an essay with a thesis. It does not say you can argue labor law, follow stand-up at full speed, or live without a dictionary. Anyone selling that jump is selling something else.

Native Chinese includes regional speech, cuts, humor, and culture the paper does not measure. The paper measures whether you follow a thesis and whether 然而 turns your reading. That is already a lot. It is not frictionless life in Beijing.

Study for the paper you will sit. If your goal is speaking, add output with people and the method in learn Chinese. If your goal is the certificate, authentic input is still the engine, but mocks set the calendar.

Keeping HSK 4–5 is not «going backwards.» It is what stops level 6 from becoming passive recognition of rare words and zero comprehension of an easy connector.

A pass is evidence about a paper, not about identity. You can fail a native dinner and still have earned the certificate. You can chat fluently and still miss 然而 on a timed essay. Train the job you signed up for.

If a teacher or a forum thread equates HSK 6 with «near-native,» treat that as marketing, not as the Wikipedia HSK six-level frame. The 5,000-word band is large. It is not a life.

The HSK 6 temptation is to open the dictionary on line two. Then you never reach 然而 and you mark the opening decoy. Agree a first pass with no lookup: which side does the author land on at the end? Only that.

Second pass: 然而, 因此, 与此同时, 此外. Third: two lexicon items that actually blocked an argument, not ten atmosphere adjectives. The grammar hub does not replace this ritual; you already saw the connectors. Now they measure whether you navigate with them.

If an opinion paragraph takes more than a few minutes on the first pass, the problem may be HSK 5 stamina, not a hole in the HSK 6 list. Lengthen the session before you inflate the deck.

Practice sources: short media pieces, transcripts, reviews. Grade the difficulty. A raw economics editorial in month one is usually quitting, not heroism.

An HSK 6 article often opens with «some people think…» That is the decoy. 然而 turns. 因此 closes. If you mark the first sentence as the author's thesis, you did the item backwards.

有人认为加班能提高效率。然而，长期来看，休息不足反而会影响判断。因此，公司应该更重视员工的休息时间。

The author does not push overtime as a permanent policy. 然而 marks the turn. 因此 marks the conclusion.

Practice: read a paragraph and write in simple Chinese: thesis in one sentence, one argument, one limit. If your summary has four English subordinates, you have not cut to the 话题–说明 mold yet.

HSK registration is on chinesetest.cn, Chinese Testing International's site. This page is not a test center. Do not pay for an exam through an intermediary you cannot check against that site.

On the site you choose date, city, and level. Confirm the paper is the six-level exam if that is what you studied. The 2021 nine-band outline is a different product. CLEC runs the framework; concrete dates live on chinesetest.cn, not on a blog.

Bring the ID the center asks for. Arrive with margin. Exam day is not when you discover you studied classic HSK 6 and the center offers another band. If your center does not appear, do not invent a shortcut: use the official channels listed on the site.

This guide does not publish fees or calendars. They change. The source is the official site. When the checklist below is green, register; do not register to «motivate yourself» if mocks are still a lottery.

Print or save the confirmation the site generates. Check the printed level: HSK 6, not another band. If you study with the HSK 6 list and the confirmation email talks about a nine-band outline, stop and write to the center before you keep adding rare cards.

You do not need an intermediary to «get a seat.» You need an account on the official site, a valid ID, and a center that appears there. Any other registration story does not belong in this guide.

Block type. You hear several minutes on whether cities should limit cars. The guest hesitates first, cites a transport figure, then supports a partial downtown limit.

Question: what is the guest's final position? Trap: the opening doubt. The last argued version wins. If you zone out at minute 15, that is still HSK 5 stamina. Do not add 200 rare words that week: lengthen the block.

然而 turns. 因此 concludes. 与此同时 adds a parallel front. 此外 adds a point, not a third compliment. At HSK 6 each connector moves the thesis; they are not synonyms of «and.»

Failing calque: one English sentence with four subordinates. The marker cannot find a thesis. 话题–说明: name the topic. Explain with 因此 or 然而. Close. Translate a paragraph of yours and count subordinates. More than two relative clauses: split before you decorate.

城市限制私家车可以减少污染。与此同时，公交必须跟上。此外，限行不能只罚郊区居民。

What is missing for the measure to work? Public transport (与此同时). 此外 adds a fairness limit, not a third compliment. If you mark «the author only wants to fine cars» you ignored the parallel connector.

30 minutes a day of reading: opinion, culture, light economics. Note 8–10 useful items, not 40. Listening: start at 0.75x if needed and rise to 1x. The goal is comprehension, not heroic suffering.

Alternate intensive reading (analysis) and extensive reading (flow, not every-line lookup). Reserve 15–20% of time for HSK 4–5. Level 6 does not forgive a cracked base. Inventory: HSK 6 list.

Weekly 300+ character essays with a clear template. Short EN↔ZH translation. Ask a corrector to mark thesis, connectors, and lexical repetition, not only «textbook grammar.»

Month 1: 30 minutes a day of authentic input + 15–20% SRS of HSK 4–5. One diagnostic. Do not open a new deck of 1,000 rare words.

Month 2: one 300-character essay a week with 然而 / 因此. Short translation. Listening at 1x when 0.75x is no longer needed.

Month 3: one full mock a week, same-day analysis, one error category the following week: rare vocab, misread connector, fatigue, attitude trap.

If you work full time, 50–70 intense minutes beat a four-hour Sunday with the dictionary open on every line.
