HSK vs HSKK: do you need the speaking test?

chinesetest.cn lists written HSK levels I–VI, also HSK Level (VII–IX), plus three speaking tests: HSKK Primary, Intermediate, and Advanced. HSKK is an audio-recorded oral. In the site's own framing, it assesses oral Chinese. It is not a chat with a teacher. It is timed audio.

You can say 我要这个 (wǒ yào zhège, I want this one) in a restaurant and still miss a dense listening item. You can also nail reading and go silent when the prompt asks for a one-minute story. The written score does not gift you a mouth.

If you only want the written certificate, still read what your center requires. Some institutes auto-add a matching oral for HSK 3–6. Skipping that line in the notice is the expensive mistake: you prep the wrong skill set.

A common pattern: you book HSK 4 because reading already holds. The institute notice adds HSKK intermediate in the same flow. You arrive having never recorded a timed minute. The written paper does not warn you. The registration notice does, if you read it.

The HSK guides stay on the written map. This article covers the oral. Do not mix both jobs in the same study hour without a reason.

Wikipedia's older pairing table maps HSK 1–2 to HSKK Beginner (about 200 words, 27 questions, 17 minutes), HSK 3–4 to Intermediate (about 900 words, 14 questions, 21 minutes), and HSK 5–6 to Advanced (about 3,000 words, 6 questions, 24 minutes). Treat that as Wikipedia's summary of the separate oral, not as your center's 2026 registration rule.

In practice, primary wants short daily lines. Intermediate wants a reason and a time chain. Advanced wants a longer answer with less scaffolding.

A prompt you can record today: 请介绍一下你的一天 (qǐng jièshào yíxià nǐ de yì tiān, please describe your day). A primary-level answer can be four short sentences. I get up. I eat breakfast. I go to class. At night I review. An intermediate answer needs a reason and a time word such as 因为 (yīnwèi, because) and 然后 (ránhòu, then).

Short intermediate example: 我早上七点起床，因为我有课 (wǒ zǎoshang qī diǎn qǐchuáng, yīnwèi wǒ yǒu kè, I get up at seven because I have class). Then: 然后我坐地铁去学校 (ránhòu wǒ zuò dìtiě qù xuéxiào, then I take the metro to school). Two sentences already show reason and sequence. That is what primary still does not demand.

The mobile chinesetest page for advanced speaking states 100 points, 60 to pass, valid two years, about 3,000 words, about 25 minutes including 10 minutes of prep, and 6 questions (see m.chinesetest.cn/HSKK/3). If you're not sure a number applies to all three levels, limit it to advanced. Fees are local. Do not paste a Chinese campus RMB fee into a worldwide price sentence.

Wikipedia describes the oral as a separate product with three labels. 2026 center notices are stricter about pairing.

A Hainan University humanities notice for the second half of 2026 says candidates for HSK 3–6 must register the matching oral at the same time: HSK 3 with HSKK primary, HSK 4 with HSKK intermediate, HSK 5 and 6 with HSKK advanced. It also lists durations (intermediate 23 minutes, primary 20, advanced 25) and RMB fees for that campus. Those fees are local to that campus. Do not treat them as a Spain or worldwide price.

Middle Tennessee State University's HSK page states the same pairing and that HSK 1 and 2 can be standalone without an oral component (asianstudies.mtsu.edu/HSK-CAS).

Madrid's Confucius Institute pages for 2026 sessions are a useful example of combined booking: on chinesetest.cn you register the written HSK and the matching HSKK is added; you do not make a second registration for the oral that comes with it. Oral-only registration can exist. The automatic email from chinesetest.cn is not the room and clock; the institute page is. Example marked provisional on that page: HSK exam 14 November 2026. Do not treat 14 November 2026 as every city's date.

If your registration flow shows written plus oral in one step, that is often policy, not an upsell. Read the center notice before you pay.

Another common clash: a friend sat HSK 3 two years ago without an oral. You open a 2026 session and the oral is already bundled. Their memory is not your rulebook. Ask the notice for your session, not last year's story.

The Athens notice for 13 December 2026 says that under their HSK 3.0 session, levels 3–6 register with a same-number speaking exam (HSK 3 + HSK 3 Speaking, and so on). That naming is the new syllabus's speaking component, not the three old HSKK labels.

The label on the form matters. "HSKK intermediate" and "HSK 4 Speaking" are not phrases to mix blindly. Study the name on your registration. Practice the format that name implies.

If your center still says HSKK intermediate with HSK 4, keep that language. If it already says HSK 4 Speaking, do not grab a mock labeled only "HSKK Advanced" out of habit. The mock should match the form string.

Wikipedia and secondary blogs can lag your institute's PDF by months. When they clash, the center and chinesetest.cn win. The historical summary orients you. It does not reserve a seat.

The official examiner is the test's recording system. An app tutor can flag a tone or a missing word. It cannot sign the certificate. We state the limit plainly: speaking practice and the Premium tutor are not HSKK and not an examiner.

Start with solo output on a timer. The sibling post practice speaking Chinese alone fits here. One prompt. Forty-five to ninety seconds. Listen back. Fix one thing.

Do not ask a model to "simulate the full HSKK with the exact 14 questions" unless you have the official template in front of you. Inventing the exam is another way to mix maps.

Record today's prompt. Transcribe one weak sentence. Rewrite that sentence as hanzi + pinyin + gloss. Example: 然后我去图书馆学习 (ránhòu wǒ qù túshūguǎn xuéxí, then I go to the library to study). Re-record only that line. Then the full answer.

If you're still on written HSK 1–2, your center may not require an oral. Four spoken sentences a day still beat another recognition deck. The free account covers HSK 1–2 with daily caps. That is not the official oral.

Do not confuse "I speak in class" with "I survive the oral clock". In class you get gestures, repeats, and a teacher who rescues you. On HSKK the microphone does not wait. Timed recording beats another silent pass through vocabulary.

Day 1. Pick a prompt. Use 请介绍一下你的一天 (qǐng jièshào yíxià nǐ de yì tiān, please describe your day). Record 45–90 seconds. Do not delete the file.

Day 2. Listen back. Mark one wrong tone or one missing word. One fix only.

Day 3. Rewrite the weak sentence. Add 因为 (yīnwèi, because) or 然后 (ránhòu, then) if you're aiming intermediate. Record again.

Day 4. A new prompt at the same level. Same length. No dictionary mid-take.

Day 5. Play day 1 and day 4 back to back. Note whether you stretch less or still fall into English at twenty seconds.

Day 6. One prompt with a harder cap: 60 seconds fixed. Stop when time ends.

Day 7. Repeat the day-1 prompt. Compare. If one measurable thing improved (fewer silences, one new connector, one stable tone), that is the week. Not "fluency". One fix.
